  1. A MOTHER’S LOVE (Matthew 20:20-23)

  2. Matt 20:20-22  20Then the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus with her sons. She knelt respectfully to ask a favor. 21"What is your request?" he asked. She replied, "In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left."

  3. Matt 20:20-22  22But Jesus answered by saying to them, "You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?" "Oh yes," they replied, "we are able!"23Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen."

  4. Mothers are teachers. Mothers are disciplinarians. Mothers are cleaning ladies. Some mothers are gardeners and mowers of lawns.

  5. Mothers are nurses and doctors and psychologists and counselors and chauffeurs and coaches.

  6. Mothers are developers of personalities, molders of vocabularies, and shapers of attitudes.

  7. Mothers are soft voices saying, "I love you." And mothers are a link to God, a child's first impression of God's love. Mothers are all these things and much, much more.

  8. "Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of Him. 'What is it you want?' He asked.

  9. She said, 'Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.'

  10. 'You don't know what you are asking,' Jesus said to them. 'Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?' 'We can,' they answered.

  11. Jesus said to them, 'You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.' (Matthew 20:20-23)

  12. 1. She prayed that her sons might be a part of His Kingdom

  13. Sometimes mothers pray out of necessity. Sometimes they pray because motherhood is not easy, but extremely difficult.

  14. Sometimes you're filled with joy and sometimes with sadness. Sometimes your children make you so proud you want to pop your buttons. At other times you can't find enough handkerchiefs to dry your tears.

  15. 2. She prayed that her sons would be actively involved in the work of His Kingdom

  16. Where does the spirit of service begin? It begins at home, with mothers and fathers setting the example and praying that their sons and daughters might be involved in the work of the kingdom.

  17. 3. She had big expectations!

  18. It is time to strive for excellence ‑ to reach for the very best there is. The Lord calls us to be His disciples, and to be effective laborers in His kingdom.
