  1. 8th Grade Parent Night Campbell Middle School An IB World School

  2. Topics for the evening include… • Testing Information • Important Dates • High School Registration • Changing High School Graduation Requirements • Academic Assistance • Question and Answer Session

  3. Testing Checkpoint Testing - Dec. 15 & 16 Checkpoint assessments have been designed to measure student learning in ELA, Mathematics, and Science taught in all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms. The assessments are part of the required testing program of Cobb County School District and are based on critical standards taught throughout the year. There are two purposes for the checkpoint assessment: • To help teachers and administrators understand the level of standard mastery at mid-year (summative) • To provide information to guide instructional planning for last half of the year (formative) Checkpoints are NOT intended to be used for grading purposes.

  4. Testing Grade 8 Writing Assessment - Jan. 18 Writing is an important part of Georgia’s statewide curriculum. Through assessment of writing, the state is able to certify a student's individual competency, monitor the effectiveness of the statewide curriculum as it relates to writing, and ensure that all students who graduate from Georgia’s high schools have basic writing competencies. An individual report is prepared for each student, and the results are summarized for each school and system. Students will be given either an expository topic or a persuasive topic. Because the test uses two different writing topics, students should be prepared to write in both genres. The Grade 8 Writing Assessment will assess expository and persuasive writing as defined by the Georgia Performance Standards. Student writing will be assessed analytically in four domains: Ideas, Organization, Style, and Conventions.

  5. Testing CRCT - April 18 thru April 27 The CRCT are state-mandated achievement tests for students in grades 1 through 8. The CRCT cover the subject areas of; • reading, • English/language arts, • mathematics, • science, and • social studies.

  6. Testing CRCT - April 18 thru April 27 The CRCT measure how well a student has acquired the knowledge and skills taught in the state curriculum. The purpose of the tests is to (1) ensure students are learning at their grade level, and (2) to provide data to teachers, schools, and school districts in order to make better instructional decisions. The tests also serve as an accountability measure and are part of the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

  7. Testing CRCT - April 18 thru April 27 Eighth-grade students are required to perform at their grade levels for both the reading and mathematics portions of the test in order to be promoted to their next respective grade levels. This means they need to score in the “Meets Expectations” range (800-849), or in the “Exceeds Expectatations” range.

  8. Testing CRCT - April 18 thru April 27 A student receiving a “Does Not Meet Expectations” score (799 and below) will receive remediation lessons and give a second chance to take the CRCT to receive a passing score. If a student does not receive a passing score upon the second administration of the test they are technically retained in 8th grade. Parents will have a chance to appeal this retention placement at Retention Hearing Conference over the summer.
