  1. Christianity

  2. Monotheistic • Christians believe in one God who has three parts. • This is called the Trinity • God the Father • God the Son • God the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost)

  3. Basic Beliefs • 1. The Old Testament teaches that God will send a Messiah (Savior). • 2. The New Testament teaches that Jesus Christ was this Messiah, Jews do not believe this point. He was born to a virgin named Mary. This happened when God put the baby inside of her.

  4. Why Jews do not believe in Jesus • Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. • Jews are looking for a person to be a ruler of their people.

  5. Why Jews do not believe in Jesus • Luke 2:11-12 - For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. • Since Jesus lived an ordinary life they cannot accept Him as their King. • Christians say his kingdom is in Heaven.

  6. Basic Beliefs • 3. Jesus lived for about 33 years. He was a preacher for the last 3 years of his life. He performed many miracles during that time. • 4. He was placed on a cross and killed because his preaching went against Jewish beliefs.

  7. Basic Beliefs • 5. He died on the cross and was buried. • 6. Three days later He came back to life and arose from the grave. • 7. He remained on earth for 40 days longer and then He went up into heaven. • 8. One day Jesus will return to earth to take his people to heaven with Him.

  8. Basic Beliefs • 9. In order to go to heaven with Jesus a person must first be saved. • 10. Salvation occurs when people believe in Jesus Christ and pray to him to forgive them of their sins.

  9. Parables • When Jesus taught he used stories that represented common, everyday items to help people understand. • Then he would ask the people what it meant and explain how it applied to religion.

  10. The following is an example of what a parable would look like. • We will call it the parable of the farmer.

  11. There was an old farmer who noticed a flock of birds in the middle of winter.

  12. They were cold and looking for shelter. A winter storm was coming and they could freeze to death.

  13. He knew his barn was warm and able to providea safe place to stay.

  14. So he opened the barn doors. But the birds were afraid, and would not go in.

  15. He had to find a way to tell the birds, or show them what they must do to be saved. He finally realized what he needed to do.

  16. What should the farmer do to save the birds from dying in the cold? The only way for the farmer to really communicate with the birds, and for the birds to understand, would be for the farmer himself to become a bird. By being a bird, the other birds would not be afraid, and he could show them the way to safety.

  17. This is exactly what God did for all people. He came to earth as man, in the person of Jesus Christ to save all.
