  1. Separated by Words Language Barriers in the Nursing Home

  2. My photonovella will feature an elderly woman who is of German descent. She speaks her native tongue as well as English. • However, she is very old and has outlived her family. She lives in a nursing home.

  3. The elderly woman is beginning to suffer from dementia. She is starting to speak her native German tongue instead of English • No one in the nursing home understands her thick German.

  4. The elderly woman cannot communicate her needs and feelings with anyone at the nursing home • Few nonverbal signs and certain sounds are the only ways of conversing the nursing home staff.

  5. Her inability to communicate causes depression, and even accelerates her dementia. • I will then have some things about possible solutions and ways to avoid this language barrier scenario.

  6. I plan to create pictures that feature my drawings as well as clipped photos.
