  2. Will • We decide to do something at the time of speaking. Oh, I’ve left the window open. I’ll goand shut it. What would you like to drink? I’ll haveonly a glass of water, please. Did you phone your mum? Oh, no! I forgot. I’ll phoneher now.

  3. Usual situation with will • Offering something: This homework is difficult. I’ll helpyou with it. • Agreeing to do something: Can you send Jane this message? Sure. I’ll doit immediately. • Promising to do something: I won’t beunpleasant. I promise. • Asking somebody to do something: Will you please turn the radio down? I’m trying to study.

  5. Shall I...? Shall we...? • Shall is occasionally used with I and we in very formal British English. We shall be very happy to see you. • Shall is used mostly in questions to ask somebody’s opinion. Shall Iopen the window? Shall we go? Just a minute. I’m not ready yet. Whatshallwe do this evening?

  6. Compare • Shall I....? ShallIshut the door? ( = Do you want me to shut the door?) • Will you...? Will you shut the door? ( = I want you to shut the door.) The negative of shall: I shan’tbe here tomorrow. (or I won’t be...) Don’t use shall with he/she/it/you/they: Shewillbe very angry. NOT! She shall be...
