Functional Objectives and Principles The data recorded to reflect relationships between works, expressions, manifestations, and items should enable the user to: a) find works, expressions, manifestations, or items that are related to those retrieved in response to the user’s search b) understand the relationship between two or more works or expressions represented by preferred access points.

Methods for describing/recording • Use of identifier • Authorized access point • Structured or unstructured description • Structured description = note or linking field: indicate elements by ISBD punctuation or MARC tagging • Unstructured description = note using narrative rather a formal tagged structure to indicate the relationship

Related Works • Scope – a related work is a work related to the work represented by a preferred access point • Common work relationships: • Whole-part, e.g., • Works in a compilation • Chapters in a book • Adaptations • Commentary • Supplements • Sequential relationships (e.g., earlier and later serials)
