  3. Cancer • Cancer is truly a disease of the cell cycle • It is the unabbreviated division of a cell no longer listening to controls • Tumor: a collection of abnormally growing cells • Benign or malignant

  4. 0 Lymph vessels Tumor Blood vessel Glandular tissue A tumor grows from a single cancer cell. Cancer cells invade neighboring tissue. Cancer cells spread through lymph and blood vessels to other parts of the body.

  6. Types of Cancers • Carcinoma: originate in the external or internal coverings (skin, stomach lining, intestinal lining) • Sarcoma: arise in tissues (bone, muscle) • Leukemia: arises in the blood • Lymphoma: arises in the lymph nodes

  7. Treatment • Surgery: remove tumor • Localized radiation: kills cells • Chemotherapy: drug that disrupts cell cycle
