  3. Essential Comment/Question • In this session, you will learn how to do more than collect $200 as you pass go! Monopolizing content reflects interdisciplinary learning by using an unusual method to help ESOL students grow amplify academic language and content while escalating their organization skills.

  4. Materials • KWL chart • Bubble map • Internet access for research • Monopoly game • Evidence Log • Journal- I use an electronic journal • Blog too

  5. Target Groups • ESOL students needing practice in oral and written language • ESOL students who need opportunities to listen and read in a non-threatening situation • All students • At RISK students

  6. Activity • Locate a partner • Brainstorm possible objectives/standards that you MIGHT be able to address • Classify the objectives/standards by content area

  7. Vocabulary • Monopoly-monopolize • Bankrupt-bankruptcy • Wealth • Equipment • Transaction • Taxes • Purchases • Real estate • Deed • Bank • Shortage • Broke • Expenses • Balance sheet • Volunteer programs • Fines • Income • Mortgages

Procedures • Divide the class into cooperative learning groups • Give each group a card with the word MONOPOLOY written on it • Group will brainstorm anything and everything they know or think they know about the word-recording it on the paper • Allow them to use a thesaurus or dictionary to locate the word and record it meaning or words that are synonyms or antonyms for it. • Have them draw an illustration of the word in action! • Allow opportunities to use the word in a sentence/conversation within their group.

Research • WELCOME to CSI Monopoly • You have recently been hired by a new company in town to conduct some research. • It is VERY detailed! • You must log all of your research on a specific form and THEN prepare a written report of your findings. • Be VERY careful to not overlook any evidence, IT COULD COST YOU YOUR JOB! • You report should reflect you best writing skills.

  10. Assessments • Rubric for group participation regarding research • Rubric for logging your information as a CSI agent • Rubric for game participation • Survey of lesson generated on SURVEY MONKEY by teacher

  11. Spin Offs • Other games – Life, Payday, Pictionary, Uno • Have students to create games about literature, vocabulary within a specific content area
