Sensor Analog ADC Digital PC Output User Low-Paper Monitoring System May02-03 Abstract In the multi-tasking workplace of today, it is often necessary to start a large print job and leave it unattended while working on other tasks. The purpose of this project is to develop and implement an inexpensive device that will measure the amount of paper in a printer and provide a warning when a print job is started that exceeds the paper resources available. General Background Design Constraints A printer only warns users when it is out of paper. A monitoring system is needed to warn users when there is not enough paper available to complete a print job. • Small size and weight and easy setup and use Measurable Milestones • Select system technology • Finalize computer interface • Complete system design • Implement and test design Technical Problem • Sensor to measure continuously on amount of paper remaining • Analog-to-digital converter to digitize sensor output • C++ program to calculate amount of paper available End-Product Description The system will warn users when a print job exceeds the current paper resources. It will consist of a printer-mounted sensor and associated electronics. A simple Windows- based application will interface with the user. Operating Environment • Business environment with average temperatures and humidity Technical Approach Intended Use and Users • Ultrasonic, weight, or laser sensor to measure remaining • paper • C++ program to interface with user • People who print large documents or use remote printers • Warn users if there is not enough paper to print a document Assumptions and Limitations Testing Approach • None of the paper will have large folds or bent edges • System must be inexpensive ($25 - $50) • System must be small enough to mount on printer • Individual components tested independently • Assembled system tested as a complete unit Budget and Personnel Effort Design Objectives • Sensor capable of measuring quantity of paper in the printer • Analog-to-digital converter to digitize sensor output • C++ program to process sensor output and display results Functional Requirements • Detect amount of paper in tray within five pages • Warn users when available paper is insufficient for the • current print job Faculty Advisors/Clients: Team Members: Professor John Lamont Bradley Leitz Professor Ralph Patterson Michael McWhirter Phiane Mekdara Tze-Teik Poh
