  3. Douglas D-558-I Skystreak, the first jet-powered aircraft to break the sound barrier (the claims about George Welch and the XP-86 notwithstanding) USMC Major Marion Carl and Navy test pilot Turner Caldwell with the D-558-I:

  4. Marion Carl during World War II:

  5. Born in Oregon's Willamette Valley on Nov. 1, 1915, Marion Carl was the first fighter ace in the Marine Corps, scoring his first kill over a Japanese Zero at Midway, and becoming an ace as part of the fabled "Cactus Air Force" at Guadalcanal. He ended the war with 18.5 kills, ranking seventh among the 120 Marine fighter aces of World War II. Then he entered the Navy Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, MD ("Pax River") and graduated with the school's first class. He was also the Corps' first helicopter pilot, and was later named prime military pilot for the D-558-I. He went on to a long and successful career as a test pilot, going on to fly the follow-on, Mach 2-capable D-558-II Skyrocket. Later promoted to Brigadier General, he took command of the 2nd Marine Air Wing during the Vietnam war, and despite his seniority, flew many combat missions in helicopter gunships and jet fighters. He retired as Inspector General of the Marine Corps, as a Major General, in 1973. His numerous decorations included the Legion of Merit with 3 Gold Stars, the Navy Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross. He had about 14,000 hours of flight time and had survived 7 plane crashes, including one when he had to bail out of a spinning Grumman Guardian ASW aircraft manually after the ejection seat failed, his chute opening just as he hit the splash the Guardian made when it plunged into Chesapeake Bay. On June 28, 1998, at his home in Roseburg, Oregon, Gen. Carl and his wife of 55 years, Edna, were surprised in their home by a 19-year-old burglar with a shotgun. The intruder demanded Mrs. Carl's cash and car keys. When Gen. Carl appeared from another room, the angered punk fired his weapon, dealing Mrs. Carl a glancing blow to the head, which she survived. Without hesitation, Marion Carl, now 82 years old, leaped on the burglar to defend his wife and his home. The gun went off. Marion E. Carl, fighter ace, test pilot, national hero, was dead. 19-year-old Jesse Fanus, a neo-Nazi with a long record of drunk driving, burglary and violent assaults, murdered him for about $400 and a car that he abandoned 10 miles away. Marion Carl is buried at Arlington; the ceremony, attended by the likes of John Glenn and many other luminaries, took place soon after Fanus was arrested. The punk has been living at taxpayer expense on Death Row since May of 1999. The man he murdered, Marion Carl, died as he had lived: A true hero.

  6. A D-558-II launch, circa 1955:

  7. The D-558-II is closely monitored by a chase pilot in an F-86 Sabre in this c. 1954 photo. This is probably a "Low Chase" photo, following the D-558-II during descent and landing: note that the F-86 has his speedbrakes out (on aft fuselage next to national insignia):

  8. Pilots from VMF-223L-R standing: HK Marvin, KD Frazier, John L. Smith, Marion E. Carl, CS Hughes, C Kendrick (KIA). kneeling: RR Read, FE Gutt, WS Lees (KIA), CG Winter, CR Jeans, CM Canfield. Date: late September 1942.(Source: The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign by John Lundstrom)

  9. “It began at Wake Island" by Shigeo Koike. During the Japanese attack on Wake Island at the end of 1941, the American defenders were hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. Despite this, the small U.S. garrison cost the Japanese 1 submarine and 4 ships sunk, 8 damaged, 22 aircraft shot down, 11 damaged and 1153 men killed or wounded. This scene shows Capt. Herbert C. Frueler, flying one of the last two remaining F4Fs, destroying a "Kate" bomber piloted by PO Noburo Kani, who had been credited with the attack and sinking of the USS Arizona 15 days earlier.

  10. by Stan Stokes. Viewed from overhead, an SBD Dauntless dive bomber attacks the Japanese carrier Soryu, while another SBD pulls out of it's dive after scoring a hit with its bomb.
