Squirrels • Squirrels eat nuts, seeds, grain, and fruit • Squirrels live in nests high in trees made of twigs and leaves lined with soft material called ‘dreys’ • Squirrels can also live in nests in hollow trees called a den • Squirrels use their tail as a parachute during a fall, and as a cushion for their landing • Squirrels do not hibernate, but stay in their nests more in the colder months click

  12. Hermit Crab • Hermit Crabs are Crustaceans • Crustaceans are species that shed their exoskeleton shell as they grow • Hermit Crabs must find a hard shell to live in to protect their bodies • Hermit Crabs must find new shells as they grow • Hermit Crabs can be pets! click

  14. Garden Snails • Garden Snails are Mollusks • Mollusks are a species that has a soft body protected by hard shell • Garden Snails like moisture • You can find them on the sidewalk after rain! • When it is too dry, the garden snail secures itself inside its shell for safety Click

  15. Bumblebees Bumblebees are a sign that spring has arrived! Real Bumblebee Nest Many bumblebeeslive in nests under ground, in bunched grass, under a house, in a shed, and even under a lawnmower! When a Bumblebee stings an animal, he is able to pull the stinger and fly away or sting multiple times Worker beesdie when the weather gets too cold Queen beemates and hibernates for the winter A bumblebee uses its long tongue to get nectar from a flower click

Honeybees Worker bees with One Queen bee Beekeeper’s job is to raise honeybees and harvest the honey Worker bees collect pollen in tiny baskets in the back of their legs Queen bee’s job is to lay eggs Honeycomb: sheets of Wax made up of 6 sided cells When a honeybee stings an animal, the stinger sticks tight, so when the bee tries to fly away , the stinger pulls from his body and he eventually dies. Honey bees make honey and pollinate flowers helping to produce fruits and seeds. Honeybees live in honeycombs in hollow trees and store honey for the winter click

  18. Common Gray Fox • The Gray Fox eats meat, insects, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and grass • The Gray Fox lives in dens that are commonly found in wooded areas • The Gray Fox grows from approximately 7 ½ to 13 pounds • The Gray Fox is small and can run very fast over short distances! click

  19. Rabbit • Rabbits live in the ground • Rabbits can be pets • Rabbits have sharp front teeth to nibble on crunchy food (like celery, carrots, and lettuce) • Rabbits are vegetarians click

Whitetail Deer • Whitetail Deer live in a variety of climates • Whitetail Deer eat leaves, bark, and fallen fruit • Whitetail Deer can grow up to 7 feet in length • Whitetail Deer was named because of the white fur on its tail • Whitetail Deer uses its white tail to warn others of danger click

Black Bear • Black Bears eat leaves, buds, flowers, berries, fruit, roots, insects, and honey • Black Bears live in forests and dens. • Black Bears like to climb trees • Black Bears hibernate • During its winter slumber, a Black Bear will lose 20 to 40 percent of its body weight.
