  1. Writing our first Academic CV GSA Workshop - October 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

  2. General formatting rules • One inch margin • 12 point font • Candidate’s name at top in 14 point font (or larger) • Single spaced • Heading in bold and all caps • Subheadings in bold only • One or two full returns before each new heading • One return between each heading and its first entry • Years have to be left justified (visible)

  3. What you don’t want to do • No right justify any element • No bullet points • No “box” or column formatting • No narrative verbiage • No description of books or articles • No personal stories • Exception: “Dissertation” has to have a short paragraph (it has to be removed one year beyond completion)

  4. Heading Materials • Name at top, centered in 14 point font • “Curriculum vitae” (centered, 12p) • Institutional and home addresses, telephone, email, parallel right and left justified

Education • List by degree • List PhD, MA, BA on descending order • Department, institution and year of completion • No starting dates • Example: 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln PhD Major: Hispanic Studies 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln MA Major: Hispanic Studies 2011 University of Deusto-Bilbao, Spain BA Mayor: English Studies BA Minor: Modern Languages and Technologies

  7. Teaching Experience • Right after education • Subdivide by area/field of teaching or by institutional location or type of experience • Write a short description of the duties as teacher • Example: 2011-present The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Graduate Assistant Responsible for teaching language classes, creating materials, and grading exams.

  8. Grants and Fellowships • List year and the name or funder, institutional name, utilization of the money, etc. • Example: 2012-Present George Rogers Memorial Merit Fellowship 2011-Present Teaching Assistantship for MA Studies

  9. Papers Or conference presentations • Conference: Year Name of the Conference, Location “Title of your talk” – panel chair’s name 2012 MACHL, Lincoln, Nebraska “Resultado de la ruptura de la realidad en el personajede Abelarda en Miau de Benito Pérez Galdós.” • Paper: “Title of the paper,” submitted/published to/in Name of the publication, year.

  10. Activities/Extracurricular University Service • Can include involvement in student groups, assistanships, clubs, etc. Year The institution and department Tasks • Do not include any description • Example: 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dep. Of Modern Languages and Literature Secretary and Treasurer at the MLGSA Assistant at the Big Red Road Show 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln, CDHR Assistant at the DH2013 Conference

  11. Research interests • If you don’t have research experience it could be interesting to add some of your research interest

  12. Additional certificates/skills • You may want to include any language certificate that you have Year Name of Certificate-Level • Language Levels • Computer skills Microsoft Office: high level, all versions Windows and Macintosh
