  3. Terms and Places Malay Peninsula is a long, narrow piece of land stretching south from Asia. An archipelago is a group of islands (ARK-ih-PELL-ih-go). Singapore is an independent city-nation in Southeast Asia. Malacca Strait is an important area for sea trade. Java, Sumatra, Manila

  4. Ten countries exist in southeast Asia. Malaysia is both on the mainland and on and island. Five of these lie on the mainland. Five of these lie are island groups.

  5. However, a quarter of the people in Malaysia are Chinese. The majority ethnic group in Malaysia is called Malay.
