Geography Climate: • Tropical monsoon • Cloudy, rainy, hot, humid summers (southwest monsoon, June to September) • Less cloudy, scant rainfall, mild temperatures, lower humidity during winter (northeast monsoon, December to April) Dangers of the Area: • Destructive earthquakes • Cyclones • Flooding • Landslides common during rainy season (June to September) • Periodic droughts Southeastern Asia borders: The Andaman Sea The Bay of Bengal Between Bangladesh and Thailand total: 678,500 sq km land: 657,740 sq km water: 20,760 sq km Slightly smaller than Texas Natural resources: petroleum, timber, tin, antimony, zinc, copper, tungsten, lead, coal, some marble, limestone, precious stones, natural gas, hydropower

  5. FOOD • Chapati is a stable in Myanmar • Similar to flatbread • Also known as roti (in South America), can be spelled as chapati, chapatti of chapathi • Made with flour, salt, butter and oil • Preperation: roll out the dough then fry it on an iron Tawa

  6. ART AND LITERATURE • Panpu are wood carvings • Temples and palaces were decorated with panpu • Myanmar literature is heavily influenced by Buddhism • Stories like the Jataka Tales

  7. Myanmar Currency (Burmese Kyat) • The $ is used in America whereas the K is used in Myanmar, placed before the numerical value. • The present kyat was introduced on July 1, 1952

  8. Myanmar Clothing • The traditional clothing of Myanmar is called a longyi • For formal occasions Burmese men wear a collarless jacket over a mandarin collared shirt and possible a turban

  9. Religion • 89% Buddhist • 4% Christian • 4% Muslim • 1% Animist • 2% Other

  10. History Humans lived in Myanmar as early as 11,000 years ago. The first identifiable civilization was known as the Mon. There were three Burmese empires. The first lasted from 1044- 1287. The second was prominent from 1288-1752. The last Burmese empire lasted from 1752-1826, when the British colonized Myanmar. Myanmar gained independence from the British in January of 1948.

  11. Government Myanmar is led by a parliamentary government, as of March 2011. Their president is TheinSein.
