  1. Hinduism • The basic ideas of Hinduism were brought by the Aryans to India in 1500 B.C. • It allows people to believe in one god or many gods, the most important are Brahman, Vishnu, Shiva.

  2. Hinduism • It does not have one holy book, instead it has sacred writings. The holiest are theVedas and epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. • The basic belief is that people have to follow their dharma, or set of rules to gain good karma.

  3. Hinduism • Caste System is a strict set of social classes. There are 4 castes and they decide one’s job, friends, who one can marry or what one can eat. • Om or Aum symbol is sacred that represents Hindu Philosophy.

  4. Hinduism • The Ganges river is a holy site, said to be water running from the hair of Shiva. • Temples are built along its shore and people take ritual baths in the river

  5. Hinduism • It is mostly practiced in India and parts of Nepal

  6. Hinduism • Believe soul goes into another living thing after death. Called samsara, which means reincarnation. • Soul keeps being reborn until it becomes part of the god Brahma, called moksha. A person can only reach this with good karma.

Sikhism • Monotheistic religion founded during the 15th c. by Guru Nanak • The religion’ founder was born in present-day Pakistan • Born to parents who were Hindu • Began spreading the ideas of Sikh after proclaiming “There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim” • Draws on practices from Hinduism and Islam

  8. Sikhism • Stresses importance of doing good action rather than carrying out rituals • Sikh scripture is the Guru Granth Sahib • Meditation seen as important • Customs include: • Uncut hair • Steel Bracelet • Wooden comb • Cotton underwear • Steel sword

  9. Buddhism • Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), 560-480 B.C. • Some branches of Buddhism believe Buddha was a god, others believe he was just a teacher.

  10. Buddhism • No central religious text, though there are many writings on the religion. • Basic beliefs are Buddha’s 4 Noble Truths • 1. Suffering is a part of life • 2. Source of suffering is man’s desires for things he can’t have • 3. Man must get rid of desires to find peace • 4. Follow the “Eightfold path” to find peace

  11. Buddhism • Buddhist imagery consists of different interpretations of Buddha. As Buddhism spread different people depicted him differently. • Holy sites in Buddhism include where Buddha was born, where he meditated to get 4 Noble truths, where he gave his first sermon and where he died.

  12. Buddhism • It is followed by people in China, Korea, Japan and other East Asian countries

  13. Buddhism • Buddhist believe in reincarnation. People will keep being reborn until they get rid of their desires. • When someone gets rid of their desires they can die and reach nirvana and become one with the universe.
