The West • Americans thought of the land beyond the Rocky Mountains as the West. • In the 1800’s many countries claimed the west as their own. • The lands of the Southwest were originally claimed by Spain then Mexico • The Spanish built missions in California • The Southwest had a unique blend of Spanish and Native American culture.

  3. Manifest Destiny • Thomas Jefferson believed the nation must increase in size to make room for it’s growing population. • The belief that the United States was destined to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
