What is chapter two about? • Effective ways on how to build confidence • Section 1 – Covers communication apprehension • Section 2 – Establishing an accurate perception which provides how you should view certain things while speaking (audience, speech, etc.) • Section 3 – Examining the planks of confidence which explains what C.O.N.D.F.I.D.E.N.C.E. stands for (content, organization, notes, friendliness, impression, dedication, empathy, newness, conviction, and enthusiasm)

  3. Section #1-understanding communication apprehension • What is communication apprehension – • Afraid to speak in public situations

  4. continued • Some symptoms of communication apprehension include: • Upset stomach • Flushed face • Dizziness • Fast heart rate • Wobbly legs • Shortness of breath • These happen because our bodies are preparing for what is an emergency situation or most of us don’t like to be judged.

  5. Section 2: Establishing an accurate perception • Main Ideas: • Perception of Audience • Perception of Speech • Perception of Yourself Perception- how you view certain subjects, people, ideas, etc.

  6. Continued • Perception of Audience: • You shouldn’t be nervous of you audience, just be calm an speak. (they react to how you move/speak) • The audience will forgive and ignore any type of mistake/awkwardness if your engaged with them • IT’S JUST SHARING INFO, NOT A HUGE PERFORMANCE

  7. continued • Perception of Speech: • A speech shouldn’t be a big thing, but instead look at it as sharing info. to your friends/peers • It’s purpose is to guide, not e judged as a performance • Be calm about it, don’t make it a forced speech • IT’S JUST SHARING INFO, NOT A HUGE PERFORMANCE

  8. continued • Perception of Yourself: • Due to the media and their creation of “beautiful people” people find it difficult to accept themselves • This makes it easy to give in and doubt ourselves which leads to a lot of problems, especially in speech • Don’t take a little mistake a long way (failure leads to success) • Self esteem = confidence, which is built, not born with

  9. Section 3 examining the planks of confidence • The Planks of Confidence: • C-content • O-organization • N-notes • F-friendliness • I-Impression • D-dedication • E-empathy • N-newness • C-conviction • E-enthusiasm

  10. Continued • Organization: • Have an outline that is easy for both you and your audience • You must have a main topic, clear areas of analysis, and supporting evidence • Content: • Have something worth saying • Your content should interest your audience • Relate to your audience

  11. Continued • Friendliness: • Set the tone of the room as a warm and comforting area • Notes: • Write down your ideas in brief • Do not have too much info on your cards or too many note cards

  12. Continued • Dedication: • Practice, Practice, Practice • You can never have enough practice • Impression: • A good start is key to building confidence • How your audience sees you from the beginning is very important

  13. continued • Newness: • Apply something with originality • Always have something new • Empathy: • Know how it feels to feel that way • You shouldn’t assume that you are the only one that feels that way
