  1. Objective TSW analyze information and identify the important events and issues related to European colonization of Texas by completing a PEGS graphic organizer.

  3. Agenda • Warm-up • 10 minutes to write the new vocabulary terms and definitions. • The vocabulary webs are homework due on Tuesday October 15th. • Political Economic and social graphic organizer (Spanish claims to Texas Part I) • Spanish Colonization Notes (input) • Reflection

  4. Warm-up The Spanish sought to strengthen its hold on Texas in the late 1600s. List at least three different ways a colonial power might try to extend its influence over a colony.

  5. Draw the following Pie in your journal (output)

  6. Study the picture of the mission. Look for clues about mission life and how the Spanish shaped the culture of Texas. They write clues in the appropriate pie piece (political, economic, social), providing at least one clue for each category. (refer to tools if needed)

  7. Missions and Presidios (write on input page)

  8. Life in the Missions • Daily Life (for friars) • Recruiting Native Americans • Religious instruction • Work • Government • Soldiers’ lives • Problems with the Mission-Presidio System • Disease • Indian dislike of mission life • Different uses of the missions • Problems at the presidio

  9. Reflection • Write a brief summary (complete sentences) on how Spanish colonization began to change what Texas looked like. (physical and human characteristics)
