  1. Lent Grade 6 Chapter 20

  2. The season of Lent is a period of preparation for Easter. • We focus on Baptism, through which we die with Christ and rise to new life with Him. • The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday evening.

  3. During Lent we are called to practice prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. • We spend extra time in conversation with God, especially in the Stations of the Cross and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. • Fasting is a form of penance in which we give up things we enjoy. • Almsgiving comes from the Greek word meaning compassion, in which we pay attention to the needs of others.

  4. Lent is also a time to travel towards the happiness of living forever with God. • We follow in the footsteps of Jesus, especially in the Stations of the Cross. • In the fourteen Stations of the Cross we journey on His path from death to resurrection. In this prayer we make a pilgrimage to each stopping point, meditating on how He redeemed each of us by His holy cross.

  5. During Lent we try to develop good spiritual habits. • Through daily prayer, examination of conscience, Bible reading, and participation in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist we can make Lent a time of drawing closer to Jesus Christ.
