  2. Why Study History? • “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Stanayana

Here’s What I think • History shows us what it means to be human. • History gives us heroes. • History helps us improve our judgment and recognize beauty. • History makes us better thinkers, readers, and writers. • It satisfies our need for identification and teaches us civic involvement. • History is FUN!! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhiCFdWeQfA

  4. What it means to be human • Teaches us tolerance-different people act and think in different ways and believe different things. Just because someone is different, doesn’t mean they are wrong or stupid. • We can learn from mistakes-ours and others.

  5. Gives us heroes • Who are some of your heroes? Why? • Where would we be without the efforts of the people who have come before us?

  6. Improve judgment • Because others think and act differently from us, we can’t judge them unless we know why they acted the way they did. • Location, culture, values, ethnicity, and many more things affect how a person develops and the decisions they make.

  7. Recognize Beauty • Was the trek of the pioneers across the west a thing of beauty? • Why is it beautiful to be a pioneer? • What else in history is beautiful?

  8. Better thinkers, readers, writers • Historians are a lot like detectives.   9. Who are we? Why be involved in politics? • History can teach us who we are and where we came from. • History shows how important it is to vote and exercise your opinion in politics. • Many people throughout history didn’t have the freedom to do so, and many fought and died for the right. • We shouldn’t squander their legacy by not raising our voices.
