  1. Challenges You Can Face Post the ICSI Treatment What is ICSI? ICSI refers to Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection which is a subtype of IVF, i.e., is In Vitro Fertilisation. It is used in the case of men who are severely infertile. It is the most successful form of IVF treatment for men. During the process of ICSI Treatment, only a single sperm is used and injected directly into a mature egg. How successful is this treatment? The fertilization rate through this process is quite high, which is estimated to be 70%-85%. Pregnancy rate through this treatment is also, empirically, found to be higher than in IVF treatments without ICSI. This is major because, in couples who opt for ICSI, the female is usually young and fertile whereas the male is severely infertile. So there is usually good quantity and quality of the eggs. What are the potential risks for the egg? The procedure of ICSI involves direct injection of sperm into a mature egg which is more invasive than other IVF procedures. There is a small but potential risk of damaging the egg during the procedure. What are the challenges post ICSI treatments? A condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can develop by an over-reaction to the fertility drugs used to stimulate egg production. It can cause swelling in stomach, pains, nausea and vomiting. Another major concern for the parents is the possibility of multiple births, i.e., is carrying more than one child. This can result in a low birth weight of the babies, and an increased risk of perinatal mortality. These include stillborn children or death immediately after a live birth. Through the procedure of ICSI, there is a heightened risk of cerebral palsy as well, meaning certain disorders of movement and muscle tone in children. There is also an increased risk of preterm labor, i.e., premature contractions and changes in the cervix for the preparation of delivery, usually before 36 weeks of pregnancy. This condition could account for hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit or even surgery. There is yet another risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy even after an ICSI procedure. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo develops in the fallopian tube instead of the womb. This condition can cause vaginal bleeding, miscarriage, etc. The possibility of a miscarriage is no less than in natural conception. Types of research

  2. Multiple types of research have been done to show that there has been a significantly increased risk of congenital disorders and hormonal abnormalities in the children conceived through ICSI procedure. These include certain musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and cardiovascular defects in the children. There is another risk of genetic disorders in the offspring conceived by ICSI procedure. This treatment is considered by men who are severely infertile, and hence this abnormality can be genetically transmitted to the child. These were some challenges one might face before and after an IVF/ICSI treatment but this should not stop couples from trying to conceive a child because as mentioned earlier, the success rate is high. Proper tests, evaluations, and screening must be done before the procedure to eliminate any health risks. In the case of any discomfort or query, a doctor must be consulted immediately.
