  4. Personal Benefits Discover new worlds! Get an insider’s view of another culture and a new view of your own. Think about how many more people and places you could really get to know, newspapers and books you could read, movies and TV programs you could understand, websites you could visit with another language! Connect with other cultures!   6. Academic Learning another language will help you in school! Research has shown that math and verbal SAT scores climb higher with each additional year of foreign language study, which means that the longer you study a foreign language, the stronger your skills become to succeed in school.* Studying another language will help you meet most university entrance requirements.** Studying a second language can improve your skills and grades in math and English.   7. Which language should I learn? There’s no one answer: what is clear is that you should choose to study a second language for the RIGHT reason(s)! Also, please note: One language is NOT easier than another– they all have their challenges and require that you learn: Listening Speaking Reading Writing Make your decision based on what is right for YOU!

  8. Why take French? It’s my heritage. I have been to (or know about) a French-speaking country and am interested in the language and culture. I know someone who speaks French. (French is spoken by over 300 million people on five continents) I am interested in a career in: Art Literature Cuisine Fashion Tourism International Business and/ or Sporting Events Did you know there are 15 French-speaking firms in Hampton Roads?

  9. Why take German? It’s my heritage. (43 million Americans claim German heritage) I have been to (or know about) a German-speaking country and am interested in the culture and language. I know someone who speaks German. I am interested in a career in: Engineering Technology (German is the 2nd most used language on the Internet after English) Medicine (Second most requested language after Latin) Classical Music (Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, Wagner…) International Business Did you know there are over 30 German-speaking firms in Hampton Roads?

  10. Why take Latin? I am interested in ancient history. I am interested in ancient languages. I want to understand the roots of English and other languages. I am interested in mythology. I want to improve my SAT and other entrance exam scores . Studies conducted by the Educational Testing Service show that Latin students consistently outperform all other students on the verbal portion of the SAT. I am interested in a career in: Medicine Science Higher Education Did you know that over 60% of English words come from Latin?

  11. Why take Spanish? It is my heritage. I have been to (or know about) a Spanish-speaking country and am interested in the language and culture. I know someone who speaks Spanish. (Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in the U.S.) I am interested in a career in: Translation and Interpretation Human Services Education Art Do you know that many native Spanish speakers live right here in the Williamsburg area?

Few offered in middle school: Algebra, Geometry, and World Languages Used towards high school graduation requirements, class rank, and grade promotion WJCC Graduation Requirements– Standard Diploma – 1 year of World Language Advanced Diploma – 2 years of 2 different languages OR 3 years + of ONE World Language What about high school credits in middle school?

Modern Language SOLs(German, French, & Spanish) Your child must be able to… Use simple exchanges Initiate and sustain brief written and oral exchanges in these topics: family, interests, time, personal belongings, and weather Understand simple oral and written materials Develop an awareness of other cultures and the interrelatedness of their products and practices. Your child must be able to… Use complex exchanges Initiate and sustain written and oral exchanges in these topics: immediate environment, people, thoughts and feelings, direction and location, plans and events Understand basic oral and written materials Demonstrate an understanding of cultures and the interrelatedness of their products and practices. LEVEL 1 MFLI.1 - 10 LEVEL 2 MFLII.1-10

Classical Language SOLs(Latin) Your child must be able to… Understand simple texts Demonstrate basic knowledge of Latin syntax and vocabulary Recognize and compose simple oral and written sentences Develop an awareness of Roman culture, products, and practices Compare basic elements of Latin to the English language Provide examples of Latin influence in other subject areas Your child must be able to… Understand texts based on a variety of topics Compose oral and written pieces with expanded vocabulary Demonstrate knowledge of Roman culture, products, and practices Develop deeper understanding English through the comparison of Latin. Use knowledge of Latin to reinforce concepts in other subjects Latin I LI.1 - 8 Latin II LII.1-8
