  2. A Fresh Start There are moments in our lives when we feel that a NEW START causes us to feel like our lives will change for the better and we will make necessary improvements.

  4. 1900’s = HOPE When the 1900’s began African Americans had HOPE for a better life in the country they helped to build.

  5. SLAVERY was ABOLISHED in 1865

  6. NEW LEADERS EMERGED

  7. ACHIEVEMENTS WERE MADE

  8. INTELLIGENCE WAS SHOWN

  9. INVENTIONS WERE MADE

  10. IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE

  11. JAMES WELDON JOHNSON • Principal • Invited Booker T Washington to come speak to his school • Wrote a poem that reflected the joys and pains of blacks in America.

  12. JOHN ROSAMAND JOHNSON • MUSICIAN • PUT THE MUSICAL ARRANGEMENT TO THE WORDS HIS BROTHER WROTE.

  14. LIFT EVERY VOICE & SING • A SONG FOR BLACKS TO EXPRESS THEIR FEELING. • SANG AFTER THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER (WHENEVER LARGE GROUPS OF BLACKS WERE IN ATTENDANCE) • THERE ARE 3 VERSES, BUT THE FIRST IS MOST COMMONLY KNOWN. • HONORS THE PAST & EMBRACES THE PRESENT
