  2. Core Arguments • Any talent is as good as academic talent • Causes non well-rounded individuals, especially in areas–values, sports arts • Rote learning impedes curiosity and love of learning

  3. Core Arguments • High stakes exams causes competition which causes selfishness • Parents will go all out for their children to become successful • Lack of empathy and understanding of other’s situations • Different economic backgrounds set children at different playing fields: tuition

  4. Does it align with the purpose of education? • Based on MOE, the purpose of education: • help students to discover their own talents • develop a passion for learning • develop their talents to their fullest potential.

  5. Does it align with the purpose of education? • The text is aligned to the purpose of education. The article questions whether we are learning for exams and teaching for exams which is not the ultimate goal. Learning should be done out of one's interest like stated by the purpose of education. • We are so harped on education that we neglect all rounded talent, like the arts, music, technology. It is also similar to the MOE purpose to help students to discover their own talents. • Stress is caused by the grades obsession, high stakes examinations and streaming. However stress should not be related to education at all, since education is to nurture talents and impart knowledge into the new generations. Therefore the article proposes the abolishment of streaming, consequently cutting down on the stress students and parents both experience due to high-stakes examinations.
