  2. Plan for the Evening

  3. Welcome and Introduction • Please remember to switch off your mobile phones! • This PowerPoint will be uploaded to the Y6 section of the school website tomorrow.

  4. Changes to the Y6 National Assessment Tests • The national curriculum changed in September 2014. • If you have older children, you will notice that there is an increased level of challenge in what the children are expected to now know. • The new curriculum is designed to ensure children acquire specific knowledge and skills which they can then demonstrate in the Y6 National Assessment Tests. • Your child has been taught using the new curriculum aims since September 2014.

  5. Raised expectations All tests at all levels have been marked onscreen since 2016. • Pupils must use a dark pencil. • Pupils should keep their test scripts in good condition and not fold their answer booklets. • When you are preparing your child for the tests, please remind them to write their answers in the space provided. Responses in the margins or the grey zone will not be marked. • The answer booklets include barcodes so each page of a test script is associated with the right pupil. Pupils must not colour in the white space or write on the barcodes. They must not write on or around the lines at the top and bottom of a page.

  20. Selected answer question

  21. Several line answer question

  22. Longer answer question

  23. Spelling Test 20 words are read out by the administrator. Children have to be able to use spelling strategies to spell unknown words. Some of the spellings skills that they will need to have are: • Spelling aims: (English aims document) • Reading Record Now it’s your turn…..

  25. Grammar test • 45 minute test • Questions get increasingly difficult. • Focus is on the application of knowledge rather than just ticking boxes. • Your child must punctuate their answers when instructed to. It will lose them the mark if they do not follow the instructions correctly!

  26. Grammar Activity- your turn! Is the sentence below a statement or a command? We can start it now.

  27. The children kicked the ball. Change the above sentence to the passive voice. • The ball was kicked by the children. • The ball was kicked. The skill needed? To use the past tense, followed by the past participle. What else are the children expected to know?

  28. Grammar Activity Which sentence shows that that you are most likely to be away next week? I could be away next week. I might be away next week. I shall be away next week. I may be away next week.

  29. Writing • Writing is based on assessments throughout the year and a final assessment will be awarded by the teachers based on several pieces of work. • If your child misses school, they will miss the opportunity to be assessed and will not achieve the level that they deserve. • Rubric and Interim Standards

  30. How to Help with English Speaking and listening – the most important! • You are the best role model for your child. Please make sure you listen carefully and actively to them when you ask them a question. Support them to respond to you in full sentences using grammatically correct English.

  31. How to Help with English Reading • Encourage your child to read a variety of genres e.g. fiction; non-fiction; graphic novels; information texts; newspapers…. • Ask them questions about what they have read; e.g. What makes you think that? How do you feel about…? Can you explain why…? I wonder why the author chose that word? • Use the strategies suggested in NC Guide for Parents (this will be given out to all parents/carers at the end of this meeting).

  32. How to Help with English Writing • Encourage them to spend a little time each day writing something. Check that: • their sentences are punctuated accurately. • their work is grammatically accurate.

  33. How can I help my child? • Continue to ensure excellent attendance and punctuality – learning starts at a quarter to nine! • If your child is in school every day and ready to learn then we can help them. • Encourage your child to do their best. • Use the CGP revision books that you have purchased. • To enable the teachers to use their skills and knowledge of your child effectively, please do not use the 2017 NATs papers for revision at home. • Use revision websites. • Ensure your child is present between the 14th – 18th May 2018. • Do not plan holidays in term time.
