  6. Increasing quantities of small pelagic fish but only 40% of the small fish caught are utilized as human food, thus are “under-utilized”.

  8. Overall Goal: Increase availability,accessibility&consumption of under-utilized small fishes and fish-based products.

  9. Research objectives 1. Determine stock sizes & nutrient composition of under-utilized small fishes.

  15. What is new and innovative? Development of novel fish-based products Conversion of the Nile perch processing by-products into safe, nutritious and affordable products. Testing improved fish processing technology to reduce losses & improve food safety and nutritional quality. Test scalable production and marketing models through youth- and women-led entrepreneurship 5. Developing & test behavior change communication and adoption interventions to increase fish consumption. Key expected results • Appropriate fish stock management models developed and disseminated. • Nutritional composition of the under-utilized small fishes and Nile perch processing by-products determined. • New postharvest handling technologies adopted for local conditions. • Gender disaggregated household consumption patterns determined. • Fish-based products suitable for women of reproductive age & children < 5 yrs developed and available on the market. • Women and youth entrepreneurs equipped with better marketing and business skills.
