  4. E-MAIL VIA HAM RADIOHow do Hams do that? In order to do e-mail, it is necessary to link to a WL2K Radio Mail Server (RMS) station. Antenna A typical ham radio digital station is composed of simple components. Radio RMS stations must have internet connection. Data Interface Ham Computer RMS links to the WL2K Central Mail Server (CMS.) The Ham computer is equipped with WL2K Client software.

  5. Antenna Data Interface Ham Computer E-MAIL VIA HAM RADIOHow do Hams do that? Where short range (up to 30 miles) communications are possible VHF may be used to provide E-mail over Ham Radio. VHF Radio

  6. E-MAIL VIA HAM RADIOHow do Hams do that? RMS PACKET Gateway Antenna By connecting to the statewide VHF packet network the ham station may be linked to the internet using an existing system. VHF Radio Data Interface WL2K CMS On Internet Ham Computer

  7. E-MAIL VIA HAM RADIOHow do Hams do that? Where the incident is not within VHF range the radio link must be made on High Frequency. Any network station in the world that can be reached may be used. There are more than 50 HF RMS Sites in North America. RMS Antenna HF Antenna VHF Radio Data Interface HF Radio WL2K CMS On Internet Ham Computer

  8. Legacy multimode TNCS (KAM+, PK-232, etc.) support P1. More expensive ($700+) SCS PTC units provide P2 (up to 8X P1 speed) and  P3 (up to16X P1 speed.) WINMOR – New soundcard-based protocol provides up to 2.5X P1 (500Hz BW) and 10X P1 (1600 Hz BW). E-MAIL VIA HAM RADIOHow do Hams do that? WL2K HF MODES NOW INCLUDE PACTOR 1,2,3 – Firmware-based data modems.

  18. WL2K E-MAIL IS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR EMCOMMS E-mail messaging is universal among agencies. Served agencies need quick error-free data transfers. More efficient use of available radio operators. Relieves voice nets for real-time and administrative matters. Minimum training required as most hams know e-mail. Non-ham typist may be used for data entry.

  19. ALL ARES MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE A WINLINK E-MAIL ACCOUNT • If you have internet e-mail now - • You can have an @winlink.org account. • No data modem/TNC or radio required. • Promotes familiarization with WL2K and training. • You can be assigned to an incident WL2K site. • You can add TNC/Radio later when desired.

  20. WHAT IS COVERED Review of WL2K Basics WL2K Support Infrastructure in Florida EMCOMMs Applications Certification for Deployment with WL2K

  21. Certification process involves setting up the gear in a tactical setting and sending and receiving one or more messages. Hams who want to deploy with WL2K capability outside their home ARES district will be required to be certified. The setting could be a driveway, city park, grandmother’s house - anywhere to demonstrate portability of all the gear including antennas. Certification using VHF and/or HF may be accomplished - user’s choice. Certification instructions may be found on the N. FL website.

  23. ARES GROUPS INCLUDE WL2K E-MAIL CAPABILITY AS AN EMCOMMS TOOL • Establish E-mail support for served agencies • Include WL2K E-mail accounts for agencies. • ARES members have and use WL2K accounts. • Support local area VHF packet network sites. • Support WL2K RMS sites. • Support Neighborhood Ham Watch.
