  1. Volunteering with the United States Equine Rescue League. Should horse slaughter be legal in the United States? Gabriella Sari

  2. Topic: Should horse slaughter be legal in the United States? • Why? I chose this topic and product because I have been around horses at a young age and I feel horse slaughter is an issue that is often overlooked.

  3. Research • In November 2011, President Obama signed a bill authorizing funding to be put back into horse slaughter plants. • Although horse meat is not considered a food source in the United States, other countries such as Mexico, Germany, and Japan do consider it an acceptable source of food. • Slaughter plants do not just sell the meat.

  4. Research • Horses are not raised with the intent of humans slaughtering and eating them. • Horse theft. • Kelsey Lefever.

  5. Research • Lake Research Partners for the American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found that 80 percent of Americans are strongly opposed to horse slaughter. • There is a history of animal cruelty and poor working conditions in United States slaughter plants.

  6. Research • The guidelines on the industry are not as defined as others since it is not as directly in the spotlight of the public eye. • Undercover footage from inside these facilities demonstrated how horrific these plants were: Many horses were conscious when they were shackled and hoisted by a rear leg.

  7. Obstacles • Staying within the page limit when writing the paper. • Finding an interview source.

  8. Successes • Found strong facts in written sources. • Found a large number of personal accounts. • Passed my paper the first time.

  9. Link Between Research and Product • The organization I volunteered with rescues abused, neglected, and abandoned horses. When horse slaughter was outlawed in the United States, they saw an increase of cases they had to take in.

  10. My Product For my product I volunteered for the United States Equine Rescue League (USERL).

  11. My Product Successes: Increased awareness of the problem. Obstacles: I’m not yet 18 so volunteer positions with the rescue league I could take on were limited.

  12. Reflection What did I learn about myself? • I have a tendency to procrastinate. • Time management.

  13. Reflection How will this help me in the future? • I will know how to make informed decisions. • I have made contacts I can use for future job and school references.

  14. Reflection Was this project beneficial? • Definitely! • Learned how to make an informed decision about an issue at hand that affected me. • Satisfying to raise awareness for a cause.

  15. Thank you for your time! Do you have any questions?
