  3. Captivate Bonnie Imler

  4. Captivate Tips • Capture shots manually and take more than you need. • When working with multiple authors: • Document preferences for mouse, highlights, etc. • Consider using reviewing tools. • Consider text-to speech feature when: • Someone else may need to make updates. • You lack a quiet place to record audio.

  5. Captivate Pros & Cons • Closed-Captioning, Audio Editing, Import PowerPoint Slides, etc. • Mouse position and type can be edited after being recorded. • Captivate 4 has text to speech feature to add audio quickly. • In Captivate 3 and older, exports as 3 files. This can be a problem if moved to a CMS. • Audio is associated with each frame individually. It is difficult to create long audio tracks that span several frames.

  6. Captivate Summary • Great for projects that require editing screen capturing. • Best tool for accessibility. Easy to add close captioning and audio. • Best choice for demonstrations and interactive tutorials of applications.

  7. Jing Capture, record, and share instantly.

  8. http://www.jingproject.com Add visuals to your online conversations! Jing is a free download that is compatible with both PC and Mac platforms. Some ways to use Jing (by TechSmith)

  9. Getting Started • Download the free version compatible with your computer. • Launch the application. • Depending on how you installed, the application will be on your toolbar or • will look like a little sun in the corner of your screen. • Select the first “ray of sun” that looks like the plus sign. This is the “Capture” tool. • A set of crossbars will appear for you to select the part of your screen that you • want to share with your audience. • Once you select your viewing area, a toolbar will appear on the bottom left. • Select the option depending if you want to capture an image or create a video.

  10. Capturing an Image • Click and drag your mouse to select the area you wish to capture. • When you let go, your selected area will appear with a toolbar. • Select “Capture an Image” at the bottom of the window.

  11. Capturing an Image • Along the left side are tools to use: • Insert an arrow • Insert text • Frame • Highlight • Select color • Along the bottom you can: • Upload to screencast.com • Change the name of the file • Save • Copy • Cancel

  12. Marking Up an Image

  13. Capturing a Video • Click and drag your mouse to select the area you wish to capture. • When you let go, your selected area will appear with a toolbar. • Select “Capture a Video” at the bottom of the window. • A 3-second countdown will begin • A message will let you know your mic is on • The recording is running while the reel tape on the sides is moving • You may stop or pause the recording & also mute the mic • You can also choose to restart the recording process if you goof

  14. Capturing a Video • When you finish a recording and hit the stop button: • The Jing Preview screen will appear and you can play back your creation • You can give the file a new name • You can upload to screencast.com • Save • Cancel

  15. Capturing a Video

  16. Jing Pros and Cons • Pros • Free! • Works on both Mac and PC platforms • Easy to download, learn, and use • Allows for both image capture and video (screen) capture • Can pause the recording if it is easier to complete in pieces • Cons • Video recording is one big recording. • If you mess up, you have to start over from the beginning. • Recordings may be 5 minutes max • Recording stops automatically at 5 minutes

  17. Final Thoughts Jing is a great tool for beginners to use for image capture or screencasting. It is a free product that can be used on both Macs and PCs with very little instruction needed to begin using properly and successfully. While it may bother people that they cannot edit out mistakes, video capture cannot exceed five minutes and therefore re-recording should not take much time. If these needs are too basic, perhaps it is time to upgrade to Jing Pro or a most robust application like Camtasia.

  18. Camtasia Nikki Massaro Kauffman

  19. Camtasia Tips • For PowerPoint, slow down animations by 3. • Decide which production settings (Web, CD, Blog, iPod) you want before recording and editing so sizing is right. • Use PIP: • To place the presenter with the material. • To compare two views of an object or process side-by-side. • To zoom in or pan out. • To review a previous concept.

  20. Camtasia Pros & Cons • Can be used to export as a single file. • Video, Audio, PIP, Zoom-n-Pan, Callout, etc. tracks are part of the overall timeline. • Mouse and cursor can't be edited after recording. • No text-to-speech feature.

  21. Camtasia Final Thoughts • Best tool for projects that have more audio/video in them than straight screen demonstrations. • Best tool for producing the same content in multiple media, such as Web, CD, Blog, iPod, etc. • Great for usability studies. • Good for capturing gaming and other video.

  22. Summary Best Practices, Comparison & Resources

  23. Screencasting Tips • One topic per video (6 min or less). • Write script/written documentation first. Script can be pasted later for captioning. • Open programs before recording. • Have a title slide, objectives slide, and closing slide. • Consider sharing your work with colleagues!
