  2. VOICE • A writer’s unique distinctive use of language; it gives it personality We just listened to 3 clips of 3 different artists singing the same song. The words are the same, but are each of these the same? Why? Why not? Voice in WRITING is somewhat a like. The writer chooses particular words, images, or sentence structure to make his work unique.

  3. DICTION • Word choice for a particular effect • Diction refers to words that have feelings attached to them (connotation) separate from the dictionary definition (denotation).

  4. IMAGERY • Descriptive words/phrases that appeal to the senses AND that are chosen to represent feelings, ideas, people, or objects

  5. SYNTAX • The arrangement of words and order of grammatical elements (sometimes called sentence structure)

  6. INFERENCE • A judgment based on reasoning rather than direct or explicit statement. Based on these details, I think that . . .

  7. TONE • The author or speaker’s attitude toward the subject. It is conveyed through the writer’s choice of words (diction) or details.

  8. Analytical Paragraph • Claim-This is your assertion about the topic in question. • Evidence- In literature, this is support from the text. • Reasoning-this is how your evidence ties to your claim (your insight or commentary)
