  3. Planets • International Astronomical Union (IAU) 2006 definition: • a planet is a celestial body that • is in orbit around the Sun, • has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape), and • has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

Dwarf Planets • A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that • is in orbit around the Sun, • has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, • has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and • is not a satellite.
