  1. Unit 2 Ecology Honors Biology

  2. Entrance Quiz 1. Draw a food web (with arrows pointing up) using these organisms: bacteria & archaea, cricket, fox, lizard, maple leaves, robin, worm 2. Put a circle around the consumers and a box around the producers. Underline the decomposers. 3. Put a T by the tertiary consumers and an H by the heterotrophs.

  3. 4. Identify one biotic factor and one abiotic factor that may affect Hellbenders.

  4. 5. Trophic LevelWhich of these are true decomposers? • Scavengers: hyenas, vultures, shrimp, insects, etc. • Bacteria and Fungi: breakdown dead tissue and recycle matter through the ecosystem • All of the above

  5. Terms: 1-11 & 21-25 Key Ideas: • Food chains/webs show the flow of ENERGY = ONE WAY! • Original source of energy for most life on earth= the SUN • Producers are at the base of the food web b/c they make their own food.

  6. Terms 5, 26, 27 Three Components of an organism’s ecology • Trophiclevel- its feeding level (ex: primary consumer, second level consumer, carnivore…)

  7. Habitat: the specific environment where an organism lives (forest, glade, etc)

  8. Niche: An organism’s role in the environment. Includes trophic level, habitat, predation……..

  9. Food Pyramids

  10. Energy Pyramid: • Shows how energy is transferred between trophic levels starting with producers. • 90% is lost at each level due to use • 10% is transferred to the next level

  11. Number Pyramid: • Shows the amount of organisms that can be supported at each trophic level. • Fewer organisms as you go up in levels due to decrease in energy 10% rule? Depends upon Size of the organisms.

  12. Biomass Pyramids: • Shows the amount of biological mass at each trophic level. • There is less mass as you go up the trophic levels

  13. If an organism eats lower on the food chain,…. it eats more efficiently. That is, it makes better use of the energy provided to that community. KEY IDEA: Energy is lost to the organisms as it travels through a food web.

  14. What would happen if the cod was eliminated from this food chain? Killer Whale Algae Krill Leopard Seal Cod

  15. Killer Whale Crabeater Seal Elephant Seal What would happen if the cod was eliminated from this food WEB? Leopard Seal Penguin Squid Cod Krill Zooplankton Algae

  16. Terms 39-40 Which of these shows greater diversity? If the cod becomes extinct, which would be more severely affected A or B? Why? A B

  17. Key Idea: • The greater the diversity the greater the stability. • That is why we worry aboutevery little organism that goes extinct!

  18. Killer Whale Crabeater Seal Elephant Seal Name two organisms that are competing with each other. Leopard Seal Penguin Squid Cod Krill Zooplankton Algae
