  2. The Problem The time school begins is too early for the students which causes them to perform at a lesser level then they would if school started later and they had more time to sleep.

  3. My Goal My goal is to have the start time of school be later in the day or have at least one day of the week start 1 hour later.

  4. How Does This Affect Me? I go to school everyday and I know the effects that no to little sleep can have on me and my peers.

  5. Facts! • There is mounting medical evidence that amount of sleep, time of day, and circadian rhythms, i.e., rhythmic cycles of the body, do play a part in how prepared an adolescent is to learn. Studies have shown, for example, that sleep deprivation is associated with memory deficits, impaired performance and alertness, and delayed responses. The loss of REM, or rapid eye movement sleep (a period of intense sleep) can result in increased irritability, anxiety and depression, decreased socialization, reduced concentration and decreased ability to handle complex tasks and to be creative. Students experiencing sleep deprivation can also experience an increased potential for drug and alcohol use, as well as vulnerability for accidents.

  6. Facts Continued… • According to one study, 20% of all high school students fall asleep in school. Additional research has shown that over 50% of students report being most alert after 3:00 p.m. In other words, most students are in school during the period they reported being least alert and are released from school at the time they are reaching their peak alertness.

  7. My Proposition Legislation: District 200 School Start Time Summary: This legislation will basically say that every Monday of every month any school in District 200 will start at least 1 hour later than normal.

  8. What Will Happen If Passed? Based on the information I have found online I believe that this legislation will cause more students to come to school on time because they aren't having to be rushed so early in the morning, be more awake in class which will also cause them to pay more attention and get better grades, lastly it will give them a better attitude towards school and their peers.

  9. Why Is This The Best Solution? This is the best solution because it doesn't make every day start later but only Monday which is usually the hardest day to start because you are ending the weekend and hopefully with students having such a good Monday, it will also influence the rest of their week.

  10. What If This Is Not Passed? If this problem is not addressed, students will continue going to school late, being half awake in class, and continue having a negative attitude towards school.

  11. Examples Of This Proposition In Action • A survey conducted on 11th and 12th grade students from Minneapolis/St. Paul schools which have experimented with different school starting times concluded, that "students with greater school-week sleep lag are at a significant disadvantage for academic achievement, owing to their reported decreased alertness and increased sleepiness during the day." Survey results showed that students with higher grades reported that they obtained more sleep and go to bed earlier on school nights than students with lower grades.

  12. Other Schools Taking This Action • West Chicago • Proviso West • Downers Grove North • Glenbard South • Glenbard East • Glenbard North • And much much more…

  13. Closing Remarks The teenagers these days will be the next district county board and you don’t want them to be doing a bad job. Let them have more time to sleep so they can do better in school and when they start working for county board you will have trust that they will do a good job.
