  2. Definition of Social Realism • Social realism tries to show people in a realistic way, normally working class people. They often show things which are not beautiful or attractive. They may show people who are elderly, sick, sad, and insane or have a disability. It can be made beautiful by the way that the writer creates it. • Social Realism is a term used to describe visual and other realistic art works which chronicle the everyday conditions of the working classes and the poor, and are critical of the social environment that courses these conditions.

  3. Example of Social Realism films.

  4. Social Realism settings • Gfg Social realism films are generally set in typical everyday locations, most social realism films are set in run down grungy areas such as council estates. Social realism films are set in these location to show that difficult situations are in every day life and can happen to anyone.

  7. Trailer Analysis This Is England These shot show clips from the This is England Trailer, These shots show gangs hanging out together around the streets this is Shown and portrayed a lot in a lot of modern social realism films. The lighting shown in this Trailer is very typical to the genre natural lighting is used in all of these shots to create a sense of realism. Scenes of gang violence are used a lot in the this is England trailer and are also extremely Common in Social realism films today because of the way the media portrays teenagers.

  8. Trailer Analysis Kidulthood ,gangs. This is another example of gangs being shown in a lot of modern social realism films For example This is England and Kidulthood are both widely based around gangs. The theme of gang violence is depicted in both Kidulthood and This Is England trailers.

  9. Lighting, props and camera work • Lighting- in social realism the lighting is normally natural this is done because it creates a sense of realism, because social realism films are set in typical everyday environments artificial lighting is not necessary. • Props- props used in social realism are mainly everyday tools objects weapons and toys , such as working tool. Some scenes include everyday activities such as putting on makeup for example a scene in fish tank. Also props like cigarettes and drugs are used because they are a big part of society today. • Camera – in Social realism most camera shots are high angled shots this is to show the characters in everyday surroundings, allot of the shot are panning shots this is because in social realism it is important to show the location this creates the realism.

  10. Social realism Timeline Kes 1969 Billy Elliot 2000 Bullet boy 2004 This is England 2006 Kidult hood 2006 Fish tank 2009 Adulthood 2008 Shank 2010 This timeline shows a few different social realism films that have been produced, social realisms films have changed dramatically since 1969 because of the way society has changed and this will continue to happen in the future.

  11. The History of Social Realism • I found this information on the website • http://www.suite101.com/content/social-realism-in-british-film-a39973 • Social Realism in British films peaked during the 1960s when what is commonly referred to as the British New Wave emerged. Although the British film industry has an illustrious past, including melodramas that rival the '40s Hollywood film noirs, it is the field of social realism that has provided the most prolonged form of cinematic entertainment.

  12. Social Realism and Representation • I found this information from this website about social realism. • http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/michaelwalford/entry/the_british_new/ • Social realist texts usually focus on the type of characters not generally found in mainstream films. Social realist texts draw in characters who inhabit the social margins of society in terms of status and power. This ‘social extension’ has usually involved the representation of the working class at moments of social and economic change. Hill has noted that this is not just a matter of representing the previously under-represented but that these subjects are represented from different specific social perspectives. • Whilst social realist representation has tended to focus upon white working class males there has been some breakthrough in terms of race in films

  13. Kes. Ken Loach • Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. Helped and encouraged by his English teacher Mr. Farthing and his fellow students, Billy finally finds a positive purpose to his unhappy existence, until tragedy strikes. I chose to look at Kes because I Feel it is relevant to the style of Film we are choosing to look at And produce. Our group is looking Child abuse and this is a key part Of the film Kes. Kes is a good example Of how they film child abuse and make It fit into other storylines.

  14. Fish Tank - Andrea Arnold • Found from the website • http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232776/ • Mia, a foul-mouthed, stroppy fifteen-year-old, lives on an Essex estate with her tarty mother, Joanne, and precocious little sister Tyler. She has been excluded from school and is awaiting admission to a referrals unit and spends her days aimlessly. She begins an uneasy friendship with Joanne's handsome, extrovert Irish boyfriend, Connor, who encourages her one interest, dancing. • The official fish tank film site. • http://www.fishtankmovie.com/ I feel fish tank is a good Example of a social realism Film and fits in well with our Idea of filming a style of child Abuse the mother in this film Is very aggressive to her daughter.

  15. Comparisons between Kes and Fish Tank. KES and Fish Tank are very similar films and both have large comparisons to each other. • KES has a young boy as the main character and Fish Tank has a young teenage girl. • Both characters are dealing with problems based around there domestic life. • Both characters have abusive parent. • In KES the Boy deals with his problems with a pet and in Fish Tank she deals with her problems with dancing.

  16. Kidulthood I chose to look at Kidulthood because it shows aggression in social realism very well and how it is filmed. It also gives a good example of social realism locations, suburban cityscapes, grimy run down council estate.

  17. Characters • Characters have sex lives, money worries, social problems. • prostitution, abortion, homosexuality, alienation and relationship problems. factory workers, office underlings, dissatisfied wives, pregnant girlfriends, runaways, poor and depressed. • Characters go through ordinary everyday problems , but social realism helps tackle the difficult situations like child abuse and helps the audience relate and understand the situation.

  18. Domestic Abuse in Social Realism films. • Abuse is a big part of society and is portrayed very well and extremely often in social realism films. Child abuse is a serious issue and social realism films can help people to recognise and come to terms with this. Child abuse is normally used as an aspect of the film and many films are based around a different theme but have child abuse incorporated into the film.
