  1. Scientific and Technical Advisory Body (STAB) for the 2001 UNESCO’s Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage

  2. Among its assignments are: To assist all State Parties which ask for help, especially those that do not have underwater archaeologists and that face fortuitous discoveries, treasure hunters’ threats, or dealing with other actors such as fishermen, coastal communities or sport divers.

  3. The experts who are part of the STAB are available for the Convention’s State Parties in order to offer recommendations about scientific standards related to the protection, conservation, research, and dissemination of the underwater cultural heritage through field and work methodologies, design of national inventories, and creation of abilities regarding such patrimony, its visibility and a fair access to it.

BENEFITS * Opportune assistance in national legal issues related to the underwater cultural heritage and the adaptation of the 2001 Convention to the national legislation. * Specialists’ direct attention through suggestions to specific problems related to the underwater cultural heritage of each State Party. * Provision of scientifically supported recommendations by the STAB experts, especially in those cases in which companies or individuals with commercial exploitation interests are present. * Support to encourage the capacities-building so each State Party can have at least one specialized underwater archaeologist.

BENEFITS * National and international visibility of each State Party’s underwater cultural heritage through electronic means. * Provision of the necessary elements in order to facilitate a better understanding of the 2001 Convention through legal and experts’ assistance which may resolve the country’s concerns, fact that would encourage more countries to join the Convention. * Provision of scientifically supported recommendations by the STAB experts, especially in those cases in which companies or individuals with commercial exploitation interests are present.

  10. * Creation of an archaeological chart of the country, understanding that you cannot protect something whose existence is unknown to you. * Underwater cultural heritage’s enough visibility, with special emphasis in the legislation, aimed to the society’s involvement through appropriation and democratic participation. * Efficient and continuous interaction with national and international police corps.

  11. * Preparation of red lists including the people involved in pillaging of cultural goods coming from and/or related with any aquatic mean, for its distribution and action on an international level, fact that may allow an efficient and conclusive response on the protection of the underwater cultural heritage. * Creation of the necessary instruments so each State Party can have at least one specialist in this field, encouraging the inclusion of underwater archaeology as a subject in universities, as well as the capacities building for future generations.
