  1. Attendance Policy By Counselors: Rosa Fitzhugh and Tammy Whitfield

  2. Attendance • All students are expected to be in school daily and on time. • Students are late after 8:00 a.m. • They are considered tardy at that time.

  3. Excused Absences • Excused absences are as follows: Illness, death, religious holiday and instances in which attendance could be hazardous as determined by DeKalb County School System • Georgia Law provides up to 5 excused absences for students whose parents are in the armed forces • Code Of Conduct Handbook

  4. Absences • Once a student misses SIX days, a letter will be sent from the DeKalb county office • If a student misses 6-8 days, counselors will contact parents to sign an “Attendance Contract” • If a student misses 8 days or more a Social Work Referral will be done

  5. State Law • State law indicates that any parent/guardian who does not comply with compulsory attendance mandates (O.C.G.A. 20-2-690.1[a] shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine not less than $25.00 and nor greater than $100.00, imprisonment not to exceed 30 days, community service, or any combination of such penalties, at the discretion of the court having jurisdiction. Each day’s absence from school in violation of this part after the child’s school system notifies the parent/guardian of five unexcused days of absence shall constitute a separate offense (O.C.G.A. 20-2-690.1[b]).

  7. Chronic Tardiness • Tardiness is a form of Neglect • Chronic tardiness will be referred to our School Social Worker

  8. Chronic Tardiness • Teacher is responsible for contacting parents when students have 3 or more consecutive tardies • If situation continues after initial contact, refer to the designated counselor for your grade level

  9. Attendance Incentives • NBA/NFL Program • Weekly Display of Homerooms who made the NBA/NFL in the breezeway • Bike and skate give away every semester • Party for all students who made the NBA Display at the end of the school year
