Standards • California Content Standard • Grade 2 Reading: • 1.1:Recognize and use knowledge of spelling patterns • This standard is a grade level standard for students at the K to 1st grade instructional level in Special Education. Grade level standards are adapted to the instructional level of the student. • Technology Standard (McREL.org) • Standard 1. Knows the characteristics and uses of computer hardware and operating systems • Level I [Grade K-2]: Benchmark 2. Powers-up computer, monitor, and starts a computer program (e.g., checks that printer is switched on and on-line; reboots the computer when necessary)

  4. Lesson Objectives • Lesson Objectives: • The students will identify the letter combination a-t or a-n. • The students will read 5 out of 8 words with the combination a-t or a-n in the story, “Zac the Rat.” • The students will create 5 words with the combination a-t or a-n.

  5. Materials • Key cards with a pictures of a cat and can (an index card with a picture of a cake on the front and a-n and a-t on the back will work) • Letter cards – a, e, c, k, l, n, m, s, t, • White boards, markers • 4 computers logged on to Starfall.com, level 2, Learn to Read - #1 Zac the Rat • Magnetic letters • Pocket Chart for recorded words • a-n and a-t combination written on 4 index cards • Word study worksheet

Lesson Overview • Whole group instruction on floor: • 15 minutes • Use this time to tap into student background knowledge from previous lessons for the week. • Rotation of 2 small group Internet activities: • 15 minutes each • Group Beginners with Aide starting on the computer first. Group Intermediate with teacher starting on word creation first

  7. Whole Group 15-30 minutes • Introduce the sound a-t/a-n by first showing the picture of a cat and the can. Read the words and ask students to identify the sound they hear in the middle of the word. • Once they have identified the /a/ sound, show the back of the card, a-t or a-n. • Show the picture of the cat again and have students repeat the word again. AT AN

  8. Whole Group cont’d • Begin with the letters c,a,t or c,a,n to make the word in the picture. Show a, and t or n first and then put the c. Say each sound as you make the word, and have students repeat. • Students are now ready to play a game where you manipulate the letters to create new words. Students will read the words as you change a letter. • Begin with cat~bat~hat~rat~pat~mat~sat • Now explain you are going to change the last letter: • Can~ban~ran~man~pan~tan • Record the words created with the letter cards onto a large chart and review. • Close the whole group lesson by reviewing the rule and key picture card.

Small Group #1:Using www.Starfall.com • www.starfall.com • Students will work on the website, Starfall.com completing 2 activities to reinforce the sound a-t or a-n. • Students begin with the /a/ phonics games, and then read the short story, “Zac the Rat.” • When completing the phonics games they must independently print out the results page.

  10. Small Group #2 • Word Study: Provide students with magnetic letters and a-t or a-n combination written on index cards. Students manipulate the letters, placing a letter in front of the combination.. • Students say the word they created. If the word sounds right, they must write it on their word study worksheet. If the word does not sound right, they try again. • Depending on the student’s ability, they repeat the process 7 more times to have a total of 8 a-t or a-n words.
