How did the modern basketball hoop system come to be?

Basketball was invented by a Springfield College instructor and graduate student James Naismith in 1891. Since this time it has grown into a worldwide athletic phenomenon. The equipment used to play the sport, including the ball and hoop, has evolved a lot over time. Naismith, along with the idea of the game, also invented the basketball hoop. He created it with a broken peach basket that was placed 10 feet in the air. Since then, the overall appearance and form of the hoop have advanced drastically. 1. Some of these changes include adjustable stands, backboards, and hoops that can’t be easily torn down. The purpose of the hoop in basketball is to put the ball through it to score points. Points are determined by how far the ball was thrown in. Eventually, the bottom of the peach basket was cut out to have the ball go all the way through. And in 1906 metal hoops began to emerge and a backboard was introduced to prevent spectators from interfering in the game. With the introduction of the backboard also came the intro of rebounds. The first backboards were nailed to various balconies. Over time the multiple balconies became poles, and backboard materials went from wood, plastic, fiberglass, to glass. The entire hoop setup has gone through numerous changes throughout the years. Issues such as players destroying backboards with their dunking skills is one of the many reasons why the backboard has changed. Now, we have backboards that are shatter-resistant glass with tear- away rims. Today’s hoops have several mechanisms in place to prevent them from being torn down. They have also changed by being adjustable. This helps with dunking, because no matter your height, you can adjust to make the net lower or higher so you are able to get the perfect

  2. dunk in. If it is too tall, you may not be able to reach it. However, if the net is too low, you can easily just drop the ball in without dunking. There are more reasons why adjustable stands are beneficial. Adjustable stands have some other advantages to them instead of just for dunking purposes. You can crank to raise and lower the stand. Being adjustable is convenient so you can have different heights for the stand. You are able to adjust the height you want for the stand, so a wide variety of people can play. With adjustable basketball hoops, children who are short can play, as well as adults who are tall. The first successful professional basketball league ran from 1925 to 1931 called the American Basketball League (ABL), where they used modern-day hoops. They consisted of metal rims, nets, and backboards. In 1948 the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed when the National Basketball League combined with the Basketball Association of America. The NBA started off using breakaway rims with bigger backboards than those used in the ABL. Without the hoop, there would be no basketball. And without basketball, there would be no Jordans, Lebrons, Currys, etc. This sport shapes individuals while creating die-hard fans and makes everyone feel as if they are on the same team. Basketball is life.
