Goals Students will … • use different resources within SIRS to gain a better understanding of the immigration issue • gain insight into the personal struggles of individual Mexican immigrants • explore the issue by using technology outside the classroom in a self directed activity in the computer lab

  4. SIRS Knowledge Source: Part I Pro vs. Con Leading Issues:Immigration • Students: examine the issue • Read: Overview • Those who favor • Those who are opposed • Answer fact, comprehension & analysis questions

  5. SIRS Researcher: Part IIBeyond the Border An online resource that accompanies the PBS documentary presentation: Beyond the Border. Presented are the 4 Ayala brothers as they settle and find work in Kentucky. Each has different story to tell: different hopes, dreams, and disappointments.

  6. Implementation:Beyond the Border • Class meets in computer lab for directed search on SIRS to PBS website • Provides an opportunity for visual & auditory learners • Video clips are available in Spanish with English text

  7. SIRS Knowledge Source: Part IIReading Strategies to Support Achievement on the English HSA Directed pre-reading activity for students: KWL • In class: begin filling in KWL chart • In lab: 1. Navigate to Beyond the Border 2. Read these parts: The Story, The Brothers, and Immigration 3. Answer fact, synthesis, & inference questions 4. Complete KWL Chart

Library Media Specialist: Assistance with search techniques in SIRS, use of computer & projector in classroom, Computer Lab instruction: general lab procedures, introduction to SIRS, how to access Beyond the Border.
