Chapter 5 Section 1 • Retire to Mount Vernon • Articles of Confederation- limited national government- power to the states • One branch- legislative- Congress- makes laws • Today- 3 branches • Executive branch- president- enforces the laws • Judicial branch- interprets the laws • At the time- each state- own court system

Chapter 5 Section 1 • No power to tax • Petition the states for money • 13 states- 1 vote- 9 out of 13 to pass • Constitutions- plan- government- duties and powers • State- more power than the national government • PA- white men- over 21- right to vote- pay taxes • Unicameral- one house • Today- bicameral- 2 houses • Run for election every year

  6. Chapter 5 Section 1 • Daniel Shays- farmer- jailed for debts • Shays marched to Springfield • January 1787- state gathers an army • Quiets the rebellion • Shays sentenced to death- eventually regains his freedom • Result= strengthen the national government and avoid civil unrest
