  1. Preparing Your Rifle For The Hunt All hunters understand and enjoy the thrill of hitting target, whether that is elk, white-tailed deer or another one of those that hunters look forward to coming up against every year during hunting season. In order to be prepared, hunters make sure they look at all the options available to them – where they want to take out a hunting lease, what they want to hunt, and what rifle they prefer over others. This is not enough. If you want to know you have the best chance at success, you need to be sure you will be accurate since no buck easily allows you a second chance. Therefore you need to have a quality scope, also called a telescopic sight, attached to the top of your rifle. Some rifles are bought with the scope already attached, whereas many are not, since hunters often enjoy fitting scopes on top of their rifles themselves. It may be a combination of DIY and knowing you have done the best job on your own, or it could be a case of shopping around for that specific scope that best suits the profile of you rifle. Either way, the scope forms an integral part of your rifle and your success at hitting your target. Attaching the scope means you will need a scope mount/scope mounting system. The mounts can be bought separately, either where you buy your rifle or elsewhere – these days also on the internet where good websites advertise them. Some of these online services that advertise them are actually not only the suppliers – they also manufacture them. The online shopper now has so many choices and also scope mounting systems to choose from. Essentially the scope mount system consists of a base part and its rings. This is the feature to which you will mount your scope. For example, the one-piece mount is popular all over the world with hunters and shooters. The one-piece is not the only option for mounting a scope, though. You can also use a 2-piece scope mount which will attach to your rifle to hold the scope in place. There are more choices, such as the weaver scope mount and the picatinny scope mounting option. The weaver scope mount is either a one- or two-piece rail with several slots cut across it. These slots hold the scope rings in place, and you have a choice, because of the different slots, of where to mount the sight. There is also the picatinny rail scope mount option. Much like the weaver design, but offered to help ensure greater accuracy and exact tolerances. Much like the weaver variety, you are able to mount your scope rings in almost any spot on the rail. There are more choices, such as the dovetail scope mounts that are made to simply slide on and off, thereby making easy changing of sights possible. The Leupold scope mount, for example, is made to fit individual firearms. These are some of the examples, in fact the most popular and widely used scope mounts. When choosing the scope mount that is just right for your rifle, it is good to know that manufacturers and suppliers have some great information available to help you make a choice – especially if you deal with a well-known, respected dealer or manufacturer. It is good to know, too, that the profile of the rifle plays its part when you choose the best scope mount. For example, if you use a Ruger rifle, you may well benefit from choosing the most applicable scope mount, whether you use a rimfire or centerfire, for example. There truly are many scope mount options – also manufacturers and suppliers that offer high-quality mounts, with good instructions as to how they are fitted to your firearm.
