  1. Preparing for your internship P.S. Take notes!

  2. Meet with your academic adviser to review your program grid. Check for core completion and minimum QPA.

  3. Prepare your resumé and cover letter; take them to Career Services in Stratton Administration Building for review.

  4. Gather writing samples Select different examples of audience. Take them to the Writing Center for review.

  5. Network!

  6. How? Talk to family, friends, employers, professors, neighbors. Ask if they know of any business in need of a writer.

  7. Read the Internship Board outside the English Department office. Look at Career Services publications.

  8. Career Services Free booklets “What can I do with a Major in English?” Books Up-to-date binders

  9. Talk to alumni and current interns.

  10. Check out websites for Chambers of Commerce and other professional organizations.

  21. Apply to internship sites that you think would be appropriate for you. Customize your cover letter . . . and remember to run a spellcheck! Don’t forget – Contact the company to get the correct spelling of a person’s name and title.

  24. Jim Reed, 1998 • Had a paid internship in an administrative office on campus. • Edited and desktop published materials. • Develops multimedia marketing materials. • Recommends involvement in KU co-curriculars such as Keystone or Keystonia.

Questions to ask an internship site • Will I have the opportunity to produce sufficient work for my portfolio? • Will I have a space in which to work, and will I receive support from the staff? • Who will be my immediate supervisor? • How many hours a week will I be expected to be in the office?

  26. Will I be working independently? In collaboration with another employee or intern? • Am I expected to have a car? • What are the procedures for closing the office in an emergency? • Is the position paid or unpaid?

  27. Howdo I get internship credit? • Choosea professional writing professor to work with you on the selection and supervision of your internship. • Verify your writing responsibilities with your site supervisor.

  28. Completeall information forms well ahead of any announced deadline and discuss them with your faculty supervisor. • Allow your faculty supervisor time to contact your site supervisor to confirm your internship details.

  29. Take all signed forms to the English Department secretary, who will get the chairperson’s signature and forward the forms to the office of the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

  30. The Dean’s office forwards the forms to the Registrar in the fall and spring semesters. • In the summer, you must retrieve the forms and deliver them where directed.

  31. Register for WRI 380 Professional Seminar concurrent with at least the first three hours of WRI 390 Professional Writing Internship.

  32. Could you repeat that? • Get your resumé ready. • Have writing samples checked. • Consult with Career Services. • Network with family, friends, alumni, etc. • Research websites, etc. • Pick the internship site that will prepare you for your choice of writing careers.
