  1. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Notes Bellwork Create vocabulary cards for the following words: Solute Solvent Solubility Concentration

  2. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Notes Tennessee SPI Objective: Differentiate between a mixture and a compound. Learning Target I understand the difference between a compound a mixture. Success Criteria I can identify compounds and mixtures using chemical symbols, prior knowledge of chemical reactions, and scientific reasoning.

  3. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds What is a Mixture? • When you combine two or more substances together, if no chemical reaction occurs, then it is called a mixture. • Any changes you observe are only physical changes. • No new substances are formedin mixtures. • Mixtures can be fairly easily separatedback into their parts. Mixture Examples: Air Steel Salt Water Blood Milk What is a Compound? • two or more different elementsthat are chemically bonded in a chemical reaction to form a new substance. • compounds CAN NOT be easily separated C6H12O6 CO2 NaCl H2O Compound Examples:

  4. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Air EXAMPLE: A Mixture 7 8 N 18 O Ar 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Argon and other gases Nitrogen Oxygen 14.0 Argon 16.0 39.9 When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs.

  5. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Steel 26 6 Fe C 98.5% Iron (Fe) and 1.5% Carbon (C) Iron Carbon 55.8 12.0 When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

  6. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Salt Water EXAMPLE: A Mixture Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Salt Water Saltwater Ingredients: 3.5 % dissolved salts (mostly NaCl) and 96.5%Water (H2O) When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

  7. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Blood EXAMPLE: A Mixture Blood Ingredients: 55% Plasma (consists of 90% water, 8% Protein, 2% other) 45% Red/White blood cells and Platelets When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs.

  8. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Milk Milk Ingredients: 88% Water, 5% Carbohydrates, 3% Fat, 3% Protein, 1% Minerals When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

  9. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Cement Soup Salad Soup No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. Salad Cement

  10. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES Mixtures Energy Drinks Soft Drinks Kool-Aid Drinks Tea No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. Kool-Aid Tea

  11. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Notes MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Hamburgers Tacos Pizza Pizza Hamburgers Tacos No chemical reaction occurred when these mixtures were formed.

  12. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds NOTE:A mixture may contain one or more compounds, as long as they do not react with each other (like Kool-Aid for example) Kool-Aid drink is a mixture Kool-Aid Ingredients: Water, sugar, flavoring agent, and a coloring agent Kool-Aid contains two compounds: (A) water (H2O) & (B) sugar/sucrose (C12H22O11). Yet these ingredients DO NOT chemically react with each other.

  13. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Notes How do I know if something is a mixture or not? Two Ways 1) Mixtures can be fairly easily taken back apart. 2) If no chemical reaction occurred when you combined the substances, then it is a mixture.

  14. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds How to separate apart mixtures Four Methods By filtration By hand By distillation By magnetism

  15. SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds How do I know if a chemical reaction occurred or not? Remember: compounds are formed during chemical reactions. • If there is no chemical reaction, then it IS NOT a compound. Note: Below are some common indicators of chemical reactions. • Remember our memory tricks: HOPESR and 4FP4CG. Explosion Heat or Light Color change Smoke or Gas Sound (sizzle, snap, crackle, pop, whistle, bang, or boom) Precipitate is formed Fizzing or Foaming If you don't see one or more of these indicators, then it probably IS NOT a compound.

  16. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Is this a mixture or a compound? Write a capital M if you think it is a mixture. Write a capital C if you think it is a compound. Why?…The ingredients DO NOTchemically combine Ingredients: Water, carbohydrates, fat, protein, etc. • Milk Mixture

  17. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Is this a mixture or a compound? Write a capital M if you think it is a mixture. Write a capital C if you think it is a compound. Why?…The ingredients DO NOTchemically combine Ingredients: Water, caffeine, sugar, coloring, and flavor • Monster Energy Drink Mixture

  18. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Is this a mixture or a compound? Write a capital M if you think it is a mixture. Write a capital C if you think it is a compound. (Glucose) Why?...has 3 atoms chemically bonded together • C6H12O6 Compound A chemical formula with more than one capital letter is a compound.

  19. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Is this a mixture or a compound? Write a capital M if you think it is a mixture. Write a capital C if you think it is a compound. Why? …The ingredients DO NOT chemically combine Ingredients: Water, chicken, vegetables, noodles, salt, etc. • Chicken Soup Mixture

  20. Review Activity SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Is this a mixture or a compound? Write a capital M if you think it is a mixture. Write a capital C if you think it is a compound. (Carbon Dioxide) Why? ...has 2 atoms chemically bonded together • CO2 Compound A chemical formula with more than one capital letter is a compound.
