  2. SMART Scholarships for HBCU Robotics Students In 2010, DARPA defined an opportunity for directing the SMART scholarship towards HBCU robotics students who are affiliated with the Advancing Robotics Technology for Societal Impact (ARTSI) Alliance. • DARPA developed a consortium of robotics-using entities within the Military Services and Defense Agencies, to function as sponsors and placement opportunities for HBCU robotics scholars who obtain a SMART scholarship. • Multiple HBCU robotics students applied for SMART scholarship • One scholarship may be awarded. • The SMART scholarship is funded across DoD by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(R&E)). Approved for Public Release Distribution Unlimited

  3. SMART Scholarships for HBCU Robotics Students In a related effort, DARPA defined an opportunity to initiate a program that would create an affordable, interoperable platform to introduce robotics operations to undergraduates and Military robotics users. It is anticipated that the robotics training platform development program will involve HBCU robotics faculty and students. • Spring 2011, DARPA plans to launch a program to develop a teaching platform for interoperable robotics systems that will play a significant role in the future of robotics systems both within the Military Departments and within undergraduate institutions and the commercial sector. It is anticipated that the HBCU robotics faculty and students will continue to participate with the DARPA robotics consortium, the development of the robotics training platform, and that more HBCU students will earn the targeted, coveted, SMART robotics scholarships in the coming years. • Although the involvement of the SMART scholarship winners in the development of robotics training platform is yet to be determined, the ARTSI faculty from HBCUs and ARTSI research institutions participated in a workshop in June of 2010, to help define the training platform.
