  7. Carbon Footprint • A measure of the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels.

SOBERING STATISTICS If you haven’t yet thought about how to reduce your “carbon footprint,” the following statistics might be all it takes. • Burning 1 gallon of gas creates 20 pounds of carbon dioxide in the air. (A gallon of gas weighs about 6 pounds, but when a carbon atom hits the atmosphere it combines with two oxygen atoms, producing a molecule more than three times the weight of carbon on its own.) • Roundtrip plane ride for one passenger from Denver to New York City: 1 ton of CO2 • Average annual CO2 emissions per person in Boulder in 2004: 17 tons
