  2. Focus Question • Discuss the achievements of Thomas Jefferson’s first Presidential term and the problems that troubled his 2nd term?

  3. 1st Term Achievements • 1803,purchase of Louisiana from France for $15 million, doubling the size of the union • Lewis & Clark expedition- Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, planned expedition of a route West to the Pacific coast of North America. They collected plant, animal, and mineral specimens. • 10 states joined the union: VT, KY, TN, OH, IN, MS, IL, AL, ME, & MO • “First Tripolitan War”- Jefferson did not want the U.S. to pay a tribute to the Barbary pirates to trade in the Mediterranean so we went to war with them • Cut the federal budget , taxes, and the national debt by a third • Author of the Declaration of Independence • Pardoned all imprisoned under the Alien and Sedition Acts

  4. 2nd Term Failures • Controversy between him and his eventual Vice President, Aaron Burr • Accused of keeping a slave mistress, Sally Hemings • Hurt the U.S. economy by passing the Embargo Act, closing the U.S. ports to foreign trade • Yazoo land fraud- after legislators were bribed to sell GA’s western land claims around the Yazoo river to 4 land companies for $500,000, publuic anger forced a newly elected Georgia legislator to rescind the act and return the money
