  3. Motivation Goal Many medical conditions can be diagnosed by observing the patients’ eyelid movement, such as: • Eye disease (Ptosis, Cataract, Glaucoma) • Degenerative neurologicdiseases • Damageto muscles or nerves Observation-based diagnosis can be time-consuming, and inaccurate due to the unnatural conditions in the doctor’s office. • Topical and systemic medication • Systemicdiseases 1

  4. Goal Goal Doctor • Creating a complete solution which will allow: • Recording the patients’ eyelid movement in a more “relaxed environment” • Analysis and diagnosis of the results by the doctor • Creation of a wide database of movement patterns and medical conditions for research purposes • Our solution: Eyelid Sensor Device (ESD) & Eyelid Pro Patient Eyelid Pro Eyelid Sensor Device (ESD) 2

  6. How does it work? How? Data is processed and stored on a micro-SD card, for later analysis by Eyelid Pro ESD A tiny magnet is attached to the eyelid Alternatively, data can be sent directly via USB Eyelid Pro 4 sensors measure the varying magnetic field due to eyelid motion 3

  7. How does it work? Challenge Sample & Processing • Magnetic field • Voltage • Calibration 4 How?

  8. How does it work? Challenge • Method that retrieves the motion’s characteristics from the voltage measurements Data Base Presentation & Analysis 5 How?

  10. ESD - Diagram ESD 6

  11. ESD - Features ESD • User-friendly operation • On/Off/Sleep mode switch • Start/Stop recording switch • Device is ‘foolproof’ – operates only according to pre-defined workflow • Notification system • Device’s state is indicated by 2 tri-color LEDs and buzzer • Signal processing • The device samples the eyelid motion, processes it and stores it ~40 times faster than a blink of an eye • USB communication • Communicates with the PC using a simple USB port, enabling high-speed and plug-and-play functionality 7

  12. ESD - Features ESD • Operating modes • Real-time–patient’s eyelid motion is sent directly to the doctor’s screen • Offline–data is stored on internal micro-SD card • Portability • Powered by a lightweight rechargeable battery • Automatically recharges through USB port • Storage • Diagnosing illnesses necessitates at least 10 minutes of observation, requiring a high capacity solution • A micro-SD card is used (up to 2GB, or 10,000 minutes of storage) • When connected, device is recognized as a disk-on-key, enabling: robustness, speed, ease-of-use & future development 8

  14. Eyelid Pro Eyelid Pro • A software tool that provides the doctor with a wide array of abilities, including: receiving, analyzing & storing the recorded eyelid motion. • Doctor’s interface with the patient data • User-friendly • Advanced analysis tools 9

  15. Eyelid Pro Eyelid Pro • 1. Eyelid pattern analyzer • Annotation support • Session remarks • Advanced toolbar • Full screen view • Cursor positioning • Image export 10

  16. Eyelid Pro Eyelid Pro • 2. Eyelid pattern comparison tool • Visually compare data between different sessions & even between different patients • Ability to adjust all axes simultaneously or separately Patient #1 Patient #2 11

  17. Eyelid Pro Eyelid Pro • 3. Real-Time data acquisition • Includes all pattern analyzer capabilities • Adjustable sample viewing window • Ability to store the session • 4. Results database • Easily updatable patient’s record, including medical conditions & medication • Ability to ignore/un-ignore recorded eyelid motion data 12

  18. Eyelid Pro Eyelid Pro • 5. Simultaneous multiple devices • Automatic device detection & user selection option • 6. Usability • Tool-tips, user manual& fully documented design • Easy to deploy – just press “install”… 12

  20. Ongoing Exposure • Summary • HaEmekMedical Center, Afula, Israel • The system was presented to the Ophthalmology department, headed by Dr. Daniel Briscoe. • Conferences • The system’s medical and technological principles were presented at: • ISVER 2013 – 33rd Meeting of the Israeli Society of Vision and Eye Research. • OOG 2013 – 43rdSpring meeting of the European Ophthalmic Oncology Group. • Clinical research • ESD will be used for clinical trials in the nearby future. 13

  21. Future Uses Summary • Automatic diagnostics • Automatically diagnose based on the eyelid pattern and medical database • Multidisciplinary research • The system provides a platform for: • Psychological studies • Analyzing reaction time to different stimuli • Communication for paralyzed people • Balance 14
