  2. How to help yourself • Keep your work safe • Keep organized • Be prepared • What the Help Desk doesn’t want you to know!

  3. Keep Your Work Safe! • Firefox is preferred browser.

  4. Keep Your Work Safe! • Restart your computer every night. • When you keep your computer running, it keeps your current tasks using RAM. • Restarting the computer cleans up the RAM and makes everything run smoother!

  5. Keep Your Work Safe! • Create long documents in Word or another text editing application located on your hard drive. • Then cut and paste and upload into Moodle, ODY, BWA, or Aventa. • Even on short questions, it’s good to have a backup of your answers!

  6. Keep Your Work Safe! • Save often • “Submit answer” • “Save” in Word, Excel, or Powerpoint • Don’t move away from a test or quiz • LMS could then lock you out • Be prepared before you take a quiz or test • Avoid timing out

  8. Keep Organized! • Set up folders for each of your classes in your “Documents”folder • Math • English • Science • Social Studies • Save work to proper folder in your “Documents” (your hard drive)

  9. Be Prepared!Have a back-up plan! • What do you do ifyou lose the use of your current computer? • Is there another computer in your house you can use? • Configure it now for BVA • What other options might you have? • Borrow one from drop-in center • Borrow one from parent or sibling

Be Prepared!Have a back-up plan! • What do you do if you lose internet service? • Where are other locations near you have that have WiFi? • Your school library • Public library • Parents’ work • Relative’s house • Friend’s house • How are you going to get there? • Walk • Public transportation • Ride bike • Parent or older sibling drives you

  11. Be Prepared!Have a back-up plan! • What do you do if you lose the use of your current computer? • What do you do if you lose internet service? • Plan now, so if it happens, you are prepared!

  12. What the Help Desk doesn’t want you to know! (Yes we do.) • If you are having issues, quit out of Firefox altogether [cmd+Q (Mac) or ctrl+Q (Windows)] relaunch. • If that doesn’t work, restart. • 9 times out of 10, this will clear up the problem.

Keyboard Shortcuts • Apple • CMD + Q – Quit the current program. • CMD + W – Close the current window. • CMD + C – Copy the highlighted text or picture. • CMD + X – CUT the highlighted text or picture. • CMD + V – Paste the highlighted text or picture. • CMD + F – Search the current document or page. • CTRL + Trackpad Button – Right click • PC • CTRL + Q – Quit the current program. • CTRL + W – Close the current window. • CTRL + C – Copy the highlighted text or picture. • CTRL + X – CUT the highlighted text or picture. • CTRL + V – Paste the highlighted text or picture. • CTRL + F – Search the current document or page. • CTRL + ALT + DEL – Open Task Manager • ALT + TAB – Switch windows.

  16. Review! • What should you do every night that will help your computer run more smoothly? • A) Close it • B) Restart it • C) Put it in “Sleep” mode

  17. Review! • When you are having problems with the internet, what should you try first? • A) Quit out of Firefox and restart • B) Call the Help Desk • C) “X” out of Firefox

  18. Review • If your password for a course or your e-mail doesn’t seem to be working, what should you do? • A) E-mail the Help Desk • B) Check the “caps lock” button • C) Throw up your hands, push back your chair, and spend the rest of the day watching TV
