  1. CELL PARTS ORGANELLES FOUND IN BOTH PLANTS AND ANIMALS

  2. CELL NUCLEUS LOCATION In the Center of the Cell surrounded by cytoplasm

  3. STRUCTURE Membrane is Nuclear Envelope, Contains nucleoplasm Nucleolus DNA (genetic material) FUNCTION Houses and protects the cells genetic information DNA Site where DNA is transcribed into RNA Nucleus

  4. NUCLEUS

  5. STRUCTURE Double membrane made of two phospholipid bilayers Contain Nuclear Pores-passageway for RNA and other materials to enter and leave the nucleus FUNCTION Separates inside of nucleus from cytoplasm Controls what enters and leaves the nucleus Protects the genetic material - DNA Nuclear Envelope

  6. STRUCTURE Thin uncoiled strands of DNA and Protein (LOOKS LIKE Spaghetti) This is the form that DNA spends most of its life. FUNCTION Structures that carry the genetic information. In this form transcription can be performed (making a copy of mRNA) CHROMATIN “BLUEPRINT OF THE CELL”

  7. STRUCTURE Condensed form of DNA and Proteins Looks like an X (BOW-TIE PASTA) Form Chromatin (DNA) takes right before cell division FUNCTION Structures that carry the genetic information. (Instructions for cells activities) It is condensed so DNA is easier to separate during cell division CHROMOSOMES “BLUEPRINT OF THE CELL”

  8. STRUCTURE Dense area within the nucleus Made of protein and rDNA FUNCTION Creates Ribosomal RNA Makes up Ribosomes (sent to Cytoplasm) NUCLEOLUS

  9. STRUCTURE Cytoplasm within nucleus, surrounds chromatin and nucleolus Jelly-like material FUNCTION Contains enzymes and nucleotides for DNA replication and rRNA(ribosomal RNA) synthesis NUCLEOPLASM

  10. Nucleus 1 4 2 3

  11. Make flashcards for the structure and function of all the parts of the nucleus Turn in a minimum of 12 flashcards Nucleus Nuclear envelope Chromatin Chromosomes Nucleolus Nucleoplasm Flashcard Homework
