  3. Mini Lesson: Interjections

  4. Interjections • Interjections are words used to express feelings or emotions. • Interjections are set off from the rest of the sentence. • Often found in dialogue. • They are the least used part of speech (but the most fun).

  5. Common Interjections • ah • yahoo • aha • ow • oh • whoa • alas • hey • well • yeah • aw • ouch • whew • hooray • oops • wow

  6. Interjections • Interjections function independently from the rest of the sentence… • Example: Huh? What does that mean? • It is therefore set off from the rest of the sentence by a question mark, comma, or exclamation mark. Hey! I can ride my bike. Hey, I can ride my bike. Exclamation mark = strong emotion Comma = not as strong of an emotion

  7. Let’s Practice…Find the interjection: • Wow! Did you see that play? • Ouch! That hurts! • I, uh, think we should leave now. • Woah! How did he catch that? • Yes, that certainly is a huge cat.

  8. Turn and Talk… • Supply an appropriate interjection for each sentence: • (pain) That looked like it hurt. • (anger) That’s my bike! • (surprise) You scared me!

  9. Turn and Talk (on the other side): • Use each of the following interjections in a sentence… • No! • Hey, • Huh? • Oops! • Uh,

  10. While you are reading your pcr book… FIND INTERJECTIONS! Write the sentence that contains an interjection in your literary notebook. Underline the interjection. What emotion does it evoke?

  11. Say “I love interjections!” 40 times tonight. Read your PCR book for 30 more minutes and add to your list of interjections. Homework:
